Sponsor Signatures No Longer a Requirement for ASCO Membership Application

Dec 02, 2013

Upon recommendation from the Membership Committee, the ASCO Board of Directors has removed sponsor signatures as a requirement for ASCO membership. The change, effective immediately, is intended to make the application process easier and more accessible to those wishing to apply for ASCO membership.

It was determined that ASCO’s thorough review process combined with advancements in verifying credentials online has eliminated the need for sponsor signatures. This step removes a barrier in the application process—especially for potential members with limited networking opportunities. As a result of the new policy, international physicians who do not have direct access to ASCO members can complete their applications in a timelier fashion.

In removing the requirement for sponsor signatures in membership applications, ASCO is following a growing trend among medical societies. According to our research, 53% of other comparable medical societies require no sponsor signatures, while only 11% require two sponsor signatures.

All other aspects of the ASCO membership process will remain the same. New applicants will still need to provide their CV, and Member Services will continue to conduct its thorough review of all new applications, including verification of board certifications.

Please contact ASCO Member Services with any questions about this new policy.
