Michael A. Carducci, MD, Joins JCO as New Associate Editor

Aug 23, 2013

Michael A. Carducci, MD, FACP, FASCO, AEGON Professor in Prostate Cancer Research and Professor of Oncology and Urology at Johns Hopkins Kimmel Cancer Center, was recently named an Associate Editor of the Journal of Clinical Oncology (JCO).

AC: What do you hope to bring to JCO in your new role?

Dr. Carducci: As a new Associate Editor, I seek to work with Dr. Stephen Cannistra and the other Associate Editors to bring readers current information that will influence the way we practice clinical oncology. My experience in translational science as a leader of a small laboratory program and the conduct of early-phase clinical trials, my focused expertise in genitourinary malignancies, and a special interest in palliative care are the background I bring to this role.

AC: What are you looking for in a JCO manuscript?

Dr. Carducci: When I receive my JCO in the mail or open my online version, I look for articles that provide new information and fresh insights that will likely affect my practice or influence my interactions with patients. Being new in the role, I have my own “so what” criteria—such as, would I want to read this article, would the broad readership of the JCO be interested or not, or will I change anything I do or is it simply affirmative?

AC: What do you hope readers gain from JCO?
Dr. Carducci: As I joined JCO, I was introduced to a number of features that, honestly, I overlooked in the past. I have always enjoyed the editorials and the Special Series issues, but in every issue, there is great integration of the data being presented into features such as Understanding the Pathway to Oncology Grand Rounds. Readers should be able to cherry-pick each JCO issue and come away with new, practical knowledge and simply be better informed.

AC: What will be your biggest challenge as a JCO Associate Editor?
Dr. Carducci: My predecessor Dr. Eric Small is a tough act to follow. I have been warned about the time commitment to give thoughtful and timely reviews and the increasing number of submitted manuscripts. My goal is to prioritize this role and seek to stay on top of the processes that allow JCO to have the impact it does. It is great to be joining an experienced roster of editors providing me with assistance to meet these challenges. I look forward to working with the whole JCO staff, the complete editorial board, and the authors who make JCO a well-rounded high-impact journal.
