JCO Publishes Two Special Series Issues

Jun 25, 2013

In the first half of this year, the Journal of Clinical Oncology (JCO) published two of four Special Series issues planned for 2013:
  1. “Updates in Non–Small-Cell Lung Cancer: New Controversies and New Conclusions” (March 10, 2013); Guest Editors: David R. Gandara, MD; Glenwood D. Goss, MD; and Everett E. Vokes, MD.
  2. “The Era of Genomics-Driven Cancer Medicine” (May 20, 2013); Guest Editors: Levi A. Garraway, MD, PhD; Jaap Verweij, MD, PhD; and Karla V. Ballman, PhD

In the Series Overview article for “Non–Small-Cell Lung Cancer: Then and Now,” corresponding author Joan H. Schiller, MD, and the Series’ guest editors note that this issue is only the second Special Series on lung cancer in the Journal in the past 30 years and that in the interim “the lung cancer world has certainly changed.”

According to the Series Overview article, the authors remain “optimistic about the accelerating pace of discovery and innovation in lung cancer biology and treatment.” They conclude by stating their hopes that this issue will “highlight opportunities for continued research.”

The second Special Series issues, “The Era of Genomics-Driven Cancer Medicine,” surveys the accelerating impact of cancer genome information in the translational and clinical oncology arenas and presents a compilation of the promise and challenges of precision cancer medicine.

In the Series Overview, “Precision Oncology,” the guest editors state that they chose the term “genomics-driven” for the title of the Series in “recognition of the fact that knowledge emanating specifically from the cancer genome will likely continue to direct the opening act of precision oncology as it plays out in clinical and translational studies over the next several years.”
