Conquer Cancer Foundation: A Year of Accomplishments

The Conquer Cancer Foundation of ASCO achieved numerous milestones andaccomplished significant goals in the past year, and looks forward tocontinued progress in creating a world free from the fear of cancer in2013.

January
  • The MissionEndowment—for the first time since itscreation—provided support for Cancer.Net, two Conquer CancerFoundation Young Investigator Awards, and Cancer Policy and ClinicalAffairs, including Survivorship efforts.
  • Twenty recipients of theGastrointestinal Cancers Symposium Merit Awards supported by CCF presented their abstracts at the Symposium inSan Francisco.
February
  • Twenty recipients of theGenitourinary Cancers Symposium Merit Awardssupported by CCF presented their abstracts at the Symposium in SanFrancisco.
  • Retained four-star CharityNavigator rating, which is calculatedbasedon a charitable organization’s financial health,transparency, and accountability. Four stars, the highest rating,indicates that the Foundation exceeds industry standards andoutperforms other similar organizations in these areas.

  • Recognized the Don ShulaFoundation as a supporter for 20consecutiveyears.
  • Held the firstinvitation-only Celebration Dinner honoringCCF’s most generous supporters.
  • Doris Duke CharitableFoundation, a new CCF donor, supported theMedical Student Rotation Awards.
July
  • Awarded more than $6 millionin research grants and awards toresearchers at all career levels.
  • Awarded the first Drug Development Research Professorship to AlexAdjei, MD, PhD. Through this five-year grant, Dr. Adjei will study thedevelopment of the toll-like receptor 5 agonist CBLB502 for cancertherapy, and mentor fellows and junior faculty members in drugdevelopment.
September
  • Won the 2012 Non-ProfitStandard of Excellence Award from the WebMarketing Association for conquercancerfoundation.org.
  • Exceeded the MissionEndowment fundraising goal of $2 million.TheEndowment was established in 2007 to support the missions of theFoundation and ASCO.
  • Established an endowed Young Investigator Award (YIA) withsupport fromThe Breast Cancer Research Foundation (BCRF) in honor and memory ofBCRF founder and breast cancer advocate Evelyn H. Lauder. The inauguralaward will be presented at the 2013 ASCO Annual Meeting to a physicianwithin the last two years of subspecialty training and planning aninvestigative career in clinical oncology focused on breast cancer.
  • CCF received its firstcorporate support for CancerLinQTM, ASCO’s rapid learning system in cancercare: a generous $1 million, five-year gift from Helsinn that willsupport building the full system that encompasses all cancers.Additional support for CancerLinQ has come from generous donations fromDr. Raj Mantena, Chan Soon-Shiong Family Foundation, Susan G. Komen forthe Cure®, and Genentech.
  • Successfully heldCCF’s first Challenge Month, which farexceeded the goal of raising $10,000 from individual online donations.With more than $35,000 given by individual donors, and generousmatching gifts from the Foundation Board of Directors and AriadPharmaceuticals, over $50,000 was raised in a single month.
  • Welcomed Elizabeth A. LaBorde as Chief Development Officer tooverseefundraising operations. Ms. LaBorde has more than 20 years offundraising and development experience. Prior to joining CCF, sheserved as Vice President of Development for Make-A-Wish America, andSenior Vice President of Development and Chief Operating Officer of theChildren’s Memorial Foundation, the philanthropic arm of theof Ann and Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago.
  • Sixteen recipients of theBreast Cancer Symposium Merit Awardssupported by CCF presented their abstracts at the Symposium in SanFrancisco. Of the 16 recipients, four are current and former CCF grantand award recipients.
OctoberNovember
  • Twenty recipients of theQuality Care Symposium Merit Awardssupportedby CCF presented their abstracts at the Symposium in San Diego. TheseMerit Awards recognize promising oncology researchers for theirresearch examining quality of care.
2012
  • Raised, in total, more than$23 million to conquer cancerworldwide byfunding breakthrough cancer research and sharing cutting-edge knowledge.
  • Over the past year, theBoard of Directors of CCF has beengreatlydiversified, welcoming five new members with backgrounds inphilanthropy, law, and business, as well as medicine: Ira Elegant,Esq., a partner in Buchbinder & Elegant, P.A., who hasrepresented several high-profile clients; Michael Gordon, JD,Co-Founder, Chief Operating Officer, and Chief Investment Officer ofAngelo, Gordon and Co., an investment advisory firm specializing inalternative investments; Thomas Roberts, Jr., MD, MSocSc, a ManagingMember and Portfolio Manager at Farallon Capital Management, LLC; AnnLurie, an internationally recognized philanthropist; and, Beth Karlan,MD, a leading gynecologic oncologist.
