Special Awards

My friend and predecessor Rich Schilsky once described my current position as Immediate Past President as “the best job in ASCO.” Mostly, I suspect, this reflects the slower pace. But partly, I believe, because you get to chair the Special Awards Selection Committee.

Our Society is loaded with talent, and talent in many areas. Amongst our 30,000 members are world-class laboratory scientists, great translational and clinical researchers, dedicated public servants, genuine humanitarians, and the many devoted volunteers who allow our wonderful Society to function at such a consistently high level. Every year we have the opportunity to reward them, in some small way, for all they do for us.

These awards include (a long list: drumroll, please) the David A. Karnofsky Award, the Science of Oncology Award, the Gianni Bonadonna Breast Cancer Award, the ASCO-American Cancer Society Award, the B.J. Kennedy Award for Scientific Excellence in Geriatric Oncology, the Pediatric Oncology Award, the Distinguished Achievement Award, the Partners in Progress Award, the Public Service Award, the Special Recognition Award, the Humanitarian Award, and the Statesman Awards.

Consider the award recipients for just one of these, the Karnofsky Award. What a list! Sidney Farber, Henry Kaplan, Emil Freireich, Bernard Fisher, Emil Frei, Nobel Laureate Donall Thomas, Saul Rosenberg, Gianni Bonadonna, my own colleague and friend Larry Einhorn, and many others (forgive me for not naming them all; go to the listing and see how many you recognize).

Their award talks could represent an oral history of our profession; they are the giants on whose shoulders we stand. Among them are those who developed effective treatments for childhood leukemias, lymphoma, breast cancer, testicular cancer, and CML, as well as the creators of the diagnostic and therapeutic technologies that dominate our field. Hundreds of thousands, perhaps millions, are alive today because of their work. I’m in awe just looking at the list. I cannot imagine anything more enjoyable than the opportunity to introduce the coming year’s awardees to you at the Annual Meeting.

We need your help in choosing this year’s award recipients. Between now and Friday, September 30th, nominations will be accepted online for these awards. Please give us your input, which I assure you the Special Awards Selection Committee relies on in making its recommendations to the Board of Directors. And then make sure you sit in on several of the talks associated with these awards at the Annual Meeting, which are routinely a satisfying experience.
