ASCO University® to Launch Interactive Web-based Board Review Course

Jan 06, 2012

The message from members has been consistent and clear—Please provide more support to those preparing for Board Certification and Recertification! Moreover, the audience seeking support for various certifications in oncology has grown and now includes fellows, those enrolled in Maintenance of Certification, and physician assistants and nurse practitioners who are looking to stay up-to-date and maintain their professional standing.

Though many Board review courses exist in oncology, participation typically requires a significant time commitment as well as in-person attendance. Accordingly, ASCO’s Integrated Media and Technology (IMT) Committee has responded to members’ needs for self assessment with a convenient format for participation by designing a web-based course.

“We recognize how difficult it is to remain up-to-date on all of the areas within oncology, and we certainly appreciate limitations on time and availability,” said Joseph Ruggiero, MD, Leader of the IMT Committee Planning Group for the Board Review. “That’s why we felt strongly about developing a Review Course that would address both of these components. The web-based format offers the flexibility and retains the expert faculty-led address of the content.”

The ASCO University Review Course will be offered in spring and fall as two live two-hour sessions in a webinar format. Each of the two sessions will cover three to four topic areas within medical oncology. Questions will be posed by faculty, and participants will be able to answer via a polling feature in the webinar format. After collective responses are displayed, the faculty will discuss the teaching point and answer rationale. The primary reference for the questions presented is the ASCO Self-Evaluation Program (ASCO-SEP®).

“The ASCO-SEP Companion Series was an invaluable resource for me while I studied for my Board Examination last year,” said Sonia Okuyama, MD, who recently completed her fellowship at the University of Colorado. “Having these assessment questions presented in an interactive Board review format will be of great value for fellows as they prepare for their exams over the coming months.”

The questions in this interactive series will include questions that cover the following disease topics:

  • Breast Cancer
  • Gastrointestinal Cancers (Colorectal and Noncolorectal)
  • Genitourinary Cancers
  • Gynecologic Cancers
  • Hematologic Malignancies
  • Lung/Thoracic Cancers

The Review Course will be presented via live webinar in March and April and will be repeated in September and October. A capture of the spring course will also be available on ASCO University. Information about registration is available on ASCO University at university.asco.org/boardreview. CME credit, as well as Certificates of Participation and/or Completion will be available to all participants in the live session.
