The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston awarded Karen Antman, MD, Provost of the Boston University Medical Campus and Dean of its School of Medicine, the 2013 Margaret L. Kripke Legend Award for Promotion of Women in Cancer Medicine and Cancer Research.

The American Association for Cancer Research (AACR) has chosen Carlos L. Arteaga, MD, Professor of Medicine and Cancer Biology at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine, as the President-Elect for 2013-2014. Dr. Arteaga was also recently appointed as the Founding Director of the Center for Cancer Targeted Therapies and the Director of the Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center Research Network in Nashville, Tennessee.

Gabriel Hortobagyi, MD, Professor in the Department of Breast Medical Oncology at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, received the Jane Cooke Wright Lectureship from AACR.

AACR awarded Hagop Kantarjian, MD, Chair and Professor in The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center’s Department of Leukemia, the 18th Annual AACR Joseph H. Burchenal Memorial Award for Outstanding Achievement in Clinical Cancer Research.

The National Cancer Institute of the National Institutes of Health awarded a five-year, $3.2 million grant to Melissa L. Fishel, PhD, Assistant Research Professor of Pediatrics, and Mark R. Kelley, PhD, Betty and Earl Herr Professor of Pediatric Oncology Research, both at the Indiana University School of Medicine. The grant will be used to focus on investigating the signaling pathways and molecular mechanisms that contribute to pancreatic tumor progression and resistance to therapy.

John Leonard, MD, Associate Dean for Clinical Research at Weill Cornell and Director of the Joint Clinical Trials Office at Weill Cornell and New York-Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical Center, was named chair of the Lymphoma Committee for the National Cancer Institute-sponsored group, the Alliance for Clinical Trials in Oncology.

Harold M. Maurer, MD, spearheaded the conception and fundraising effort for the new Fred & Pamela Buffett Cancer Center at the University of Nebraska and is now involved with the University of Nebraska Foundation.

Robert A. Nagourney, MD, authored Outliving Cancer: The Better, Smarter Way to Treat Your Cancer, a patient resource that details the use of laboratory assay-based treatment to improve patient outcomes.

Manuela Niewel, MD, is the newly appointed Medical Director of Chiltern International Limited and will serve as a therapeutic expert in the area of oncology.

Maria Alma Rodriguez, MD, Vice President of Medical Affairs and Professor of Lymphoma/Myeloma at MD Anderson, received The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston’s President’s Leadership Award for Advancing Women Faculty.

Philip A. Salem, MD, Director Emeritus of cancer research and holder of the Philip A. Salem Cancer Research Chair at St. Luke’s Episcopal Hospital, is the subject of two new books, Cancer, Love and the Politics of Hope—The Life and Vision of Philip A. Salem, M.D. and Philip Salem: The Rebel, the Scientist and the Humanist.

The ECOG-ACRIN Cancer Research Group appointed Joseph A. Sparano, MD, Professor of Medicine and Professor of Obstetrics, Gynecology, and Women’s Health at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine and Associate Chairman of the Department of Oncology at the Montefiore Medical Center, as their Vice Chair.

John W. Sweetenham, MD, FRCP, FACP, is the new Executive Medical Director and Senior Director for Clinical Affairs at the University of Utah’s Huntsman Cancer Institute.

Michael A. Thompson, MD, PhD, is the new Medical Director of Cancer Research at Aurora Health Care, in Wisconsin. Dr. Thompson is also an online columnist on ASCOconnection.org.
