Anne Katz, PhD, RN, FAAN, a certified sexuality counselor at CancerCare Manitoba and nurse counselor at the Manitoba Prostate Centre, counsels patients with a history of cancer who are experiencing sexual and relationship challenges. She previously served editor of the Oncology Nursing Forum research journal and is a member of the ASCO Meeting & Member Publications Editorial Board. The author of 13 books, Dr. Katz offers insight for health care providers and consumers on the topics of illness and sexuality, as well as cancer survivorship. Health care providers have a tendency to talk a lot; we are trained to ask questions, to give information, to provide advice and guidance. But if we just stop and let the silence fill the room we can learn so much from our patients.

Our patients bring the context of their lives into the hospitals and cancer centers where they receive care, including experiences of abuse and trauma. Patient-centered care means addressing situations that may be triggers for these patients or cause them emotional harm.
