Dr. John V. Cox Will Return to Serve as Interim Editor-in-Chief

By Rachel Cagan Facci, ASCO Communications

When Linda D. Bosserman, MD, FACP, FASCO, began her tenure as editor-in-chief of ASCO’s JCO Oncology Practice (JCO OP) in January 2019, she expanded the publication’s priorities of care delivery and quality improvement while adding two new ones addressing issues of equity and value. She spearheaded the development of several special series, including one published in the May 2021 issue of the journal addressing “Disparities in Cancer Care for Black People in the United States,” and others to be published in the near future. The series are led by a task force of experts that include those with lived experience to ensure that all aspects of disparities in care are covered. Additional series in development will focus on Hispanic/Latinx, Asian American, and American Indian and Alaska Native populations.

Under Dr. Bosserman’s leadership, the number of Care Delivery Reviews increased in each issue. Topic-focused special series were developed for each issue, discussing adolescent and young adult patients, tele-oncology, and physician wellness, among others.

“I am honored to have served as the editor-in-chief of JCO Oncology Practice,” said Dr. Bosserman. “I am proud of the growth the journal has seen during the past 3 years and am glad to have the opportunity to continue to be actively involved moving forward. I am grateful to the committed editorial board members, expert reviewers, ASCO committee members, and the JCO OP staff, who together helped increase submissions 50%.”

Dr. Bosserman is stepping down as editor-in-chief to devote time to increasing professional and personal responsibilities. She is a clinical professor and staff physician at City of Hope National Medical Center in Duarte, CA, focusing on value-based care, breast cancer, and international medicine. An active ASCO volunteer, Dr. Bosserman also serves on a number of ASCO committees, including the Cancer Care Delivery Council, the Quality Publications Task Force, the Ethics Committee, and the Clinical Practice Committee.

ASCO welcomes John V. Cox, DO, FASCO, MBA, MACP, back to the role as interim editor-in-chief. Having previously served as editor-in-chief for 10 years and as an inaugural member of the editorial board of JCO OP, Dr. Cox contributed to the publication's launch and oversaw a period of increased visibility for the journal. He will serve an interim term for 1 year, starting September 1, 2021.

“We are profoundly grateful to Dr. Bosserman for her service as editor-in-chief of JCO Oncology Practice,” said ASCO CEO Clifford A. Hudis, MD, FACP, FASCO. “The journal experienced tremendous growth under her leadership and we are glad it will continue to benefit from her ongoing involvement. We are also grateful to Dr. Cox for stepping in to again lead JCO Oncology Practice while our formal search for a permanent editor-in-chief proceeds.”

Part of ASCO’s family of journals, JCO OP publishes impactful information and insights to keep oncology practice current on changes and challenges inherent in delivering equitable, high-quality oncology care with an evolving value-based lens. ASCO is conducting an open search for the next editor-in-chief and welcomes interested applicants. To learn more, contact Angela Cochran, Vice President, Publishing, at JCOOP@asco.org.
