JCO Debuts New Simultaneous Publication Program at 2017 Annual Meeting

Jul 14, 2017

During the 2017 ASCO Annual Meeting, attendees and Journal of Clinical Oncology (JCO) readers witnessed a first for the journal: the oral presentation of an abstract coordinated to correspond precisely with the publication of the full article on JCO’s website.

Immediately following the abstract presentation by George W. Sledge, MD, FASCO, on Saturday, June 3, his full article, “MONARCH 2: Abemaciclib in combination with fulvestrant in patients with HR+/HER2-advanced breast cancer with disease progression while receiving endocrine therapy,” published online at JCO.org, along with three companion articles.

JCO plans to continue its simultaneous publication program at future Annual Meetings, a response to feedback from presenters. In 2018 and beyond, if an author deems their work to be sufficiently novel and high impact, they should send a detailed presubmission inquiry to jco@asco.org, along with a cover letter that describes the work in detail. Authors should do this as soon as possible so that JCO can have time to determine the appropriateness of the work for simultaneous online publication during the Annual Meeting (even if the final status of the abstract has not yet been determined). If JCO considers the work potentially appropriate for simultaneous online presentation at the time of the Annual Meeting, the completed manuscript must be officially submitted to JCO by a predetermined deadline in order to allow time for peer review, revisions, and processing.
