ASCO Resources Available to Help Practices Navigate Quality Reporting Under MACRA

Jul 14, 2017

New round of ASCO quality reporting webinars available this summer

The Quality Payment Program (QPP), established by the Medicare Access and CHIP Reauthorization Act (MACRA), launched in January 2017 and is being implemented in oncology practices across the country. 2017 is a transition year, but practices still have to report some quality data in order to avoid financial penalties in 2019. This transition year offers practices an opportunity to test the QPP reporting system before 2018, when quality reporting will require a significantly heavier lift to avoid financial penalties in 2020.

Does your practice have a plan in place to successfully navigate QPP over the next few years? As your partner in practice transformation, ASCO has hosted a new series of webinars to guide oncology practices to successful quality reporting.

Recordings of recent webinars are available on ASCO.org, including:

  • Quality Payment Program: Scoring the Quality Measures
  • Quality Payment Program: Scoring for Advancing Care Information and Improvement Activities
  • Quality Payment Program: Optimizing Your MIPS Score (available July 10)

More QPP resources and updates are available in ASCO’s online MACRA and QPP toolkit at ASCO.org.

ASCO COME HOME offers direct support to practices transitioning to QPP

ASCO is making it easier for practices to understand and prepare for the transition to QPP in the years ahead with ASCO COME HOME.

ASCO COME HOME, an oncology medical home program, provides readiness assessment tools to help practices evaluate whether or not they are ready to transition either to the Merit-Based Incentive Payment System (MIPS) or to an advanced alternative payment model (APM) within QPP, as well as implementation tools to help practices actually make the change. The program structures reimbursement around the full range of services needed by patients with cancer and provides patients with greater access to evidence-based care.

ASCO COME HOME is an expansion of COME HOME, which began in 2012 with a Center for Medicare and Medicaid Innovation grant to test an oncology medical home model. Results from the first seven COME HOME practices show a reduction in:

  • 30-day hospital readmission rates (down 11.7%)
  • Emergency department visits (down 6.6%)
  • Inpatient hospital admissions (down 12.5%)
  • Overall cost of care (down 7.2%)

The COME HOME practices, combined, also maintained a high patient satisfaction rate, averaging from 91.3% to 98.1%, throughout the grant period.

Specifically, ASCO COME HOME offers:

  • Readiness assessments focused on the practice transformation necessary to implement oncology medical home concepts, successfully participate in alternative payment models, and identify practice-specific recommendations for transitioning to QPP
  • Consulting services personalized to the practice needs in the transition from volume- to value-based care
  • Symptom triage pathways, automated decision support for aggressive cancer symptom management
  • Support for participation in alternative payment models, including the Oncology Care Model (OCM); services include financial and quality reporting and Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services administration compliance support
  • Analytical services that evaluate financial, clinical, and operations practice data
