May 08, 2017

Dr. Gilberto Lopes appointed JGO Editor in Chief

In February 2016, Gilberto de Lima Lopes Jr., MD, MBA, FAMS, began his term as editor in chief of the Journal of Global Oncology (JGO). ASCO’s online-only, open-access journal addresses the unique challenges of cancer care and research in low- and middle-income countries.

Dr. Lopes is a medical oncologist who serves as associate director for Global Oncology at the Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center and associate professor of Clinical Medicine at the University of Miami.

He looks forward to the journal’s continued success, and believes he will bring “the right motivation, skillset, and network of colleagues and collaborators to serve as the editor in chief for JGO and to help ASCO and our international membership make it into the most important journal on the subject, as the voice of global oncology,” Dr. Lopes said.

Participants selected for 2017 JGO Editorial Fellowship

After a competitive selection process, two fellows have been chosen to participate in the 2017 JGO Editorial Fellowship: Bishal Gyawali, MD, and Oluwole Babatunde, MD, MPH, PhD.

The JGO Editorial Fellowship will introduce participants to the processes of peer review, editing, and publishing medical research manuscripts in journals. The program gives participants experience that will enhance their own research career in oncology and in scientific publishing, and helps them develop the skills necessary to contribute to the journal as an editor or editorial board member in the future. Through interaction with current editors and editorial board members, fellows learn the roles of editor, reviewer, and publisher to gain a broad understanding of the overall scientific publishing process.

“The JGO Editorial Fellowship helps us train colleagues from low- and middle-income countries who have an interest in global oncology in the day-to-day activities involved in manuscript writing, submission, peer review, and publication, helping us develop their academic careers while increasing expertise in the field around the world,” Dr. Lopes said.
