Yutaka Niihara, MD, MPH, joined the Generex Biotechnology Corporation’s Board of Directors as its executive chair.
Alessandro Riva, MD, joined Gilead Sciences, Inc. as senior vice president, Hematology and Oncology Therapeutic Area Head. Dr. Riva joins Gilead from Novartis Oncology, where he served as head of Global Oncology Development.
President and chief scientific officer of Caris Life Sciences David Spetzler, PhD, announced that Caris and the Lustgarten Foundation are collaborating to support a clinical trial evaluating the impact of immunotherapy in the treatment of pancreatic cancer. “We are excited to collaborate with the Lustgarten Foundation and believe our comprehensive genomic and proteomic tumor profiling capabilities plus MI Trials services are uniquely positioned to enhance patient accrual in support of this important clinical study,” said Dr. Spetzler.
Pierre P. Massion, MD, of the Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center, is senior author of a study published in JCI Insight that found a proteomic “signature” from the airways of heavy smokers that demonstrates a profound metabolic reprogramming in the airway epithelium that could lead to better risk assessment and perhaps new ways to intercept lung cancer early in its development.
Gustavo W. Leone, PhD, was appointed director of the Hollings Cancer Center at the Medical University of South Carolina. Dr. Leone will oversee the patient care arm of the Hollings Cancer Center and lead cancer-related research efforts in order to achieve and promote transdisciplinary and translational collaborative research.
Joseph Mignone, MD, of 21st Century Oncology, joined the International Association of HealthCare Professionals. Dr. Mignone currently serves on the Cancer Committee for the University of Florida and Memorial Hospital in Jacksonville, Department of Medical Quality Review and Clinical Professional Review Committee. He also serves as clinical practice vice-chair of the Florida Society of Clinical Oncology.
Aki Smith, BA, founder of Hope for Stomach Cancer, announced the nonprofit’s partnership with Perthera, Inc., to provide Perthera’s Precision Cancer Analysis (PCA) service—a comprehensive molecular analysis of a patient’s tumor—to patients working with Hope for Stomach Cancer at no cost to them. “We’re hopeful that through this new program, patients with stomach cancer can get a PCA so they can be treated with precision drugs more often,” said Ms. Smith.
Emiel J. Rutgers, MD, PhD, received the European Cancer Organization’s Clinical Research Award jointly with Laura van ‘t Veer, PhD, for innovation in breast cancer diagnosis and the development of diagnostics for implementation in daily clinical practice, including treatment guidelines, regulatory policies, and reimbursement.
Justin Frank Antoni Klamerus, MD, MMM, was appointed president of the Karmanos Cancer Hospital and Karmanos Cancer Network, Michigan’s largest cancer care and research provider with 14 locations in Michigan. Prior to this role, Dr. Klamerus served as the chief quality officer and executive vice president of community oncology for Karmanos.
Larissa K. F. Temple, MD, has been appointed chief of the Division of Colorectal Surgery at the University of Rochester Medical Center. She also will lead the Surgical Health Outcomes & Research Enterprise and serve as professor of surgery in the School of Medicine and Dentistry.
