Researcher Spotlight: Dr. David M. Waterhouse

Dec 22, 2016

CCF is excited to partner with David M. Waterhouse, MD, MPH, of Oncology Hematology Care, Cincinnati, OH, to increase awareness for the Foundation’s Campaign to Conquer Cancer.

CCF was proud to support Dr. Waterhouse with a YIA more than 20 years ago. Since then, he’s devoted his career to advancing cancer research and improving patient access to the best possible treatments.

The awards that young cancer researchers receive to support innovative research initiatives are often pivotal to launching their careers. Many of these projects have led to important breakthroughs in new treatments, prevention, and early detection.

“CCF fulfills a great unmet need,” said Dr. Waterhouse. “Much of the funds from other organizations are going towards infrastructure or specific projects. We’re using our funds to build the next generation of researchers—the people who will come in and fill my shoes.”

CCF-funded grants and awards support clinical and translational cancer research performed by gifted physician-scientists at every stage of their careers, from the best and brightest young investigators to senior researchers providing mentorship opportunities for the next generation.

“When you see patients receiving a drug which, a few years earlier, was one of your investigational agents, you know you’re making a difference,” said Dr. Waterhouse.

The Conquer Cancer Foundation has awarded more than $105 million in cancer research funding through 1,700 grants and awards to researchers in 68 countries, often in support of work not funded by other organizations, such as palliative care and rare cancers.

CCF fosters a worldwide network of cancer specialists through fellowships that bring international colleagues to the U.S. for clinical and research collaborations. By funding development of easily accessible publications, online resources, and live events, CCF helps bring up-to-the-minute information into patients’ homes, physicians’ offices, and other clinical settings.

“I want to see more funding for the young investigators and the people just beginning their careers to help build the critical foundation that’s needed to cure this disease,” said Dr. Waterhouse. “That’s why I am so excited to partner with the Conquer Cancer Foundation to help them raise the important seed money to help propel the careers of bright young researchers.”

Support the Conquer Cancer Foundation and assist the next generation of cancer researchers by making a donation today. Your gift will go directly to funding the best and brightest researchers with the most innovative ideas, and will help lead to important breakthroughs that will improve the quality of and access to cancer treatments and patient care worldwide.
