The Opportunity - and the Obligation - of the Poster Discussant

Dr. Dizon posted earlier today about his pleasure and trepidation regarding his Poster Session. Having been in his shoes, I appreciate his words completely. At this Meeting I am faced with a similar but somewhat different task. I have the honor of discussing three posters regarding social media and online communication.

What that means is that I have to summarize the three posters’ rationale, results, and conclusions in 12 minutes. ASCO has also been kind enough to ask me not to simply parrot the information but to expand, add context, and possibly suggest new questions or further topics of exploration.

It has been an absolute pleasure to communicate with the authors of these posters and they have all been more than generous with their materials to ease my preparations. In contrast to Dr. Dizon, my challenge comes not in waiting to shed what questions will come at me but rather having to be the one who comes up with those questions and to present them in the most concise way possible.

My respect for these authors is great. I only hope I have risen to the challenge. I guess we'll see come Monday.

Dr. Graham will discuss Abstracts 6518, 6519, and 6520 at the Health Services Research and Quality of Care Poster Discussion Session on Monday, June 1, 4:45 PM-6:00 PM, in Room S404.
