As ASCO nearsthe end of its 50thanniversary year, the oncology communityhas takentime to acknowledgesignificant inroads against cancerwhile recognizing that much more workneeds to be done. One of those mountainsleft to climb is addressing thegrowing needs of cancer survivors forimproved long-term, multifaceted care.

The Society has long recognized thespecialized needs of survivors andformally cemented thecommitment to improvingrelated treatmentand care with thelaunch of the CancerSurvivorship Committeein 2011. This month’s cover story takes a closer look at the work ofthat Committee and the resources theyhave produced, including a compendiumof recently published tools, ongoingeducation initiatives, and a growingnumber of survivorship-related ClinicalPractice Guidelines (three were producedin 2014 and more are in thepipeline).

Also in this issue, we conclude ourseries of 50th anniversary articleswith a look at the evolution of the Society’spolicy and advocacy efforts, including a timeline of specific milestonesstarting in 1979 when the Boardof Directors voted to begin advocatingto Congress on such key issues asresearch funding and Medicare reimbursement.Complex issues continueto challenge the oncology communityon almost every front, and ASCO continuesto be at the forefront of shapingand informing these debates.

Also in this anniversary year, morethan 2,000 membersvoted on the “Top 5”advances in modernoncology over the past50 years; ASCO Connection has published the results.

November is also the time that our“get out the vote” message is in fullforce. The Society needs your participationto help define our collectiveway forward. See the list of distinguished candidatesfor the 2015 election, followed by a Q&Awith the two candidatesfor 2015-2016 President-Elect.

As always, thank you for reading.
