ASCO CME Program: Scope & Impact. What’s Your Experience?

Mar 25, 2011

April 2011 Issue: As we prepare to showcase ASCO’s accomplishments in its CME program to the ACCME as the Society prepares for reaccreditation, we would like to reach out to the oncology community to ask for your input on the impact that ASCO CME activities have made on your ability to improve clinical or translational research and/or improve the care of your patients.

We’d love to hear from you and encourage you to provide your feedback in the “ASCO CME Reaccreditation” thread in the Education & Meeting News Forum.

A Track Record of Accomplishment
In the five years since ASCO’s last reaccreditation in 2006, the Society’s CME Program has continued to grow and evolve to more comprehensively meet the educational needs of the professional oncology community.

During these past five years, we have been proud of our achievements:

  • Annual participation in ASCO’s CME activities increased by 35% from 30,375 professional attendees in 2006 to 40,895 professional attendees in 2010.
  • CME credits offered increased from 253.25 hours in 2006 to 472.25 hours in 2010.
  • ASCO University®, first launched in 2008, now offers  CME-accredited activities in 10 different disease areas.
  • In 2008, ASCO bolstered its support of the physician Maintenance of Certification process by introducing a new series of self-evaluation of medical knowledge modules on ASCO University, which offer Part II MOC credit to participating physicians as well as CME credit.  Today, ASCO offers six of these modules and plans to release more in the coming years. As a way to catalog our current portfolio of CME activities, ASCO maintains a CME Program home page. This page provides a snapshot of available activities, both by type and also by track, with links directly to each activity home page. It’s updated frequently so check it often!

Consistently High Evaluations
Of course, ASCO is also committed to the highest standard of quality in its programs and strives, through its educational initiatives, to enhance physician research and practice, leading ultimately to improvements in the care of patients with cancer. To that end, we are very proud of the consistently high results we received from participant evaluations across 2010 activities:

  • An average of 95% of participants rate the quality of activities as Excellent
  • An average of 90% of professionals feels that the content of educational activities is relevant to their practice or research.
  • An average of 81% of attendees commit to changing their practice as a result of their participation in the activity

We look forward to continuing to provide quality education and Making a world of difference in cancer care. Please take a moment to provide feedback on how ASCO’s CME program has helped you by visiting the ASCO Connection Forums—select “Education and Meeting News,” then “ASCO CME Reaccreditation.” Thank you!
