New Cardiac Co-Morbidity Boards on ASCO University®

Mar 28, 2011

April 2011 issue: ASCO University is offering a new pilot series that focuses on issues relating to cardiovascular disease in patients with cancer. The format of these online programs is based on the successful ASCO Tumor Boards, in which a patient case is presented and discussed by expert faculty. An open discussion forum accompanies the case presentation to facilitate continued interaction and dialogue between participants and the faculty. The Cardiac Co-Morbidity Boards are designed to address the educational needs of oncologists and cardiologists who are caring for patients with both cardiovascular disease and cancer.

Planning Group members Sandra M. Swain, MD, a medical oncologist, and Richard M. Steingart, MD, a cardiologist, collaborate to identify topic areas in each module and to identify experts in cardiology and oncology to present the case discussion.

“This new series addresses some of the difficult cardiac issues that must be managed in our patients,” said Dr. Swain. “Physicians from both subspecialties need to know how to deal with issues such as cardiac toxicities arising from cancer treatments, and late effects and survivorship issues experienced by patients treated for childhood cancers.”

First module available

The first module in the series is available now on ASCO University (university. asco.org/cardiac). The case topic, presented by Charles E. Geyer, MD, and Michael S. Ewer, MD, deals with toxicities associated with trastuzumab and anthracyclines. A second module will be available in May and will focus on hypertension and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) signaling pathway (VSP) inhibitors.
