ASCO Volunteers Lobby on Capitol Hill

Jun 22, 2011

In separate events this spring, members of ASCO’s Leadership Development Program, a year-long program designed to groom future Society leaders, and members of ASCO’s Government Relations Committee and Cancer Research Committee met with members of Congress and key staff to communicate the urgent need to:

  • support ongoing cancer research;
  • address the problem of oncology drug shortages;
  • permanently repeal the Sustainable Growth Rate (SGR) formula; and
  • maintain NIH funding for the remainder of FY2011, during the budget debate, and into FY2012.

ASCO volunteers and staff continue to meet with policymakers to educate them about cancer care and the effects that policies have on oncology practices and people with cancer, and to advocate on behalf of ASCO members.
