ASCO Elects New Leaders

Nine members have been elected to Society leadership roles commencing at the 2012 ASCO Annual Meeting.

  Clifford A. Hudis, MD
President-Elect (2012-2013; President, 2013-2014; Immediate Past President, 2014-2015)
Dr. Hudis, a medical oncologist, is Chief of the Breast Cancer Medicine Service at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center and a Professor of Medicine at Weill Cornell Medical College. He joined the institution’s faculty in 1991 and has held a number of administrative, teaching, and leadership positions while maintaining an active research program and busy clinical practice. An ASCO member since 1991, Dr. Hudis currently serves as the Society’s Treasurer, Chair of the Finance Committee, and an Associate Editor of the Journal of Clinical Oncology.
     

  Susan Lerner Cohn, MD
Treasurer (2012-2015)
Dr. Cohn is Director of Pediatric Clinical Sciences at Comer Children’s Hospital in Chicago and a Professor of Pediatrics at the University of Chicago. Before accepting her current positions, Dr. Cohn served as a faculty member at Northwestern University Medical School and as an attending physician at Children’s Memorial Hospital. An ASCO member since 1988, she currently serves on the Society’s Board of Directors and Finance Committee, and on the Editorial Board of ASCO Connection.
     
  Stephen S. Grubbs, MD
Board of Directors—Community Oncologist (2012-2015)
Dr. Grubbs is a community oncologist and managing partner at Medical Oncology Hematology Consultants, PA, Newark, Delaware. He has previously held positions at Christiana Care Health System, Dartmouth Medical School, St. Francis Hospital, Memorial Hospital of Salem County, and Jefferson Medical College. An ASCO member since 1985, Dr. Grubbs currently serves on the Government Relations Committee and as a Genitourinary Literature Reviewer for ASCO University®.
     
  Lillian L. Siu, MD, FRCPC
Board of Directors—International Oncologist (2012-2016)
Dr. Siu is a senior medical oncologist at Princess Margaret Hospital and a Full Professor of Medicine at the University of Toronto. She holds a Tier I Research Chair in Experimental Therapeutics supported by Cancer Care Ontario and is the Principal Investigator of the Princess Margaret Hospital Phase I Consortium. An ASCO member since 1997, Dr. Siu currently serves on the Editorial Board of the Journal of Clinical Oncology.
     
  Smita Bhatia, MD, MPH
Board of Directors—Pediatric Oncologist (2012-2016)
Dr. Bhatia is the Ruth Ziegler Chair of the Department of Population Sciences, Associate Director of the City of Hope Comprehensive Cancer Center, Co-Leader of the Cancer Control and Population Sciences Program, and a Professor at City of Hope National Medical Center. An ASCO member since 1996 (the same year that she received an ASCO Young Investigator Award), she currently serves on the Cancer Survivorship Committee.
     
  Hagop M. Kantarjian, MD
Board of Directors—Undesignated Specialty (2012-2016)
Dr. Kantarjian is Department Chair, the Kelcie Margaret Kana Research Chair, and a Professor in the Department of Leukemia at The University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center. He is also Associate Vice President for Global Academic Programs. An ASCO member since 1983, Dr. Kantarjian is a member of the Editorial Board of the Journal of Clinical Oncology and serves on the Cancer Education Committee (Leukemia, Myelodysplasia, and Transplantation Subcommittee).
     
  Gary H. Lyman, MD, MPH, FACP, FRCP (Edin)
Board of Directors—Undesignated Specialty (2012-2016)
Dr. Lyman is a Professor of Medicine at Duke University School of Medicine, Director of the Comparative Effectiveness and Outcomes Research Program, a Senior Fellow at the Duke Center for Clinical Health Policy Research, and a member of the Duke Cancer Institute and Duke Center for Personalized Medicine. He previously held positions at the Moffitt Cancer Center and Research Institute, the University of South Florida, and the University of Rochester. An ASCO member since 1977, Dr. Lyman is Chair-Elect of the Clinical Practice Guidelines Committee and serves on the Editorial Board of the Journal of Clinical Oncology.
     
  William M. Gradishar, MD
Nominating Committee (2012-2015; Chair, 2014-2015)
Dr. Gradishar is a Professor of Medicine and Director of the Multidisciplinary Breast Cancer Program in the Department of Medicine at Northwestern University, and Director of the Maggie Daley Center for Women’s Cancer Care at Northwestern Memorial Hospital/Robert H. Lurie Comprehensive Cancer Center. An ASCO member since 1990, he currently serves as Chair of the Professional Development Committee and as a member of the Journal of Clinical Oncology Editorial Board.
     
  Patricia Mucci LoRusso, DO
Nominating Committee (2012-2015)
Dr. LoRusso is Director of the Phase I Clinical Trials Program and the Center for Experimental Therapeutics at the Karmanos Cancer Institute. She is a Professor in the Division of Hematology and Oncology at Wayne State University School of Medicine. An ASCO member since 1992, Dr. LoRusso currently serves on the Scientific Program Committee (Developmental Therapeutics—Experimental Therapeutics Subcommittee).

Meet ASCO’s New Leaders at the 2012 Annual Meeting
The President-Elect and new members of the Board of Directors and Nominating Committee will be introduced and take office during the Annual Business Meeting, to be held June 4 at the Annual Meeting. Members are encouraged to attend this event, where they will have the opportunity to meet the newly elected leaders and to witness the passing of the presidential gavel.
