Fill a Moment with Daily Medical Education

Apr 18, 2012

According to principles of adult learning, knowledge retention and application occurs best when information is presented and repeated over a period of time. ASCO University® is now offering an engaging new mobile learning format for self-assessment: Daily Medical Education™ (DME). With DME, questions are delivered by email on a defined schedule over a period of several weeks. This mobile learning format allows participants to easily “fill a moment” with a question or two, without having to devote hours to a single learning session.

With DME, two multiple-choice questions, taken from self-assessments in the ASCO-SEP® Companion Series, are sent every other day. Questions, written by expert faculty, include links to references as well as answer rationales. Participants are able to see how others have answered the same question. To enhance learning, questions that are answered incorrectly are repeated several weeks later. Questions answered correctly may also be repeated to remove the “lucky guess” factor. Participants are able to control whether a question is repeated or retired.

In this pilot year, a “General Oncology” DME course is available at no charge to ASCO members. The course is designed to help learners identify knowledge gaps and better prepare for ABIM Certification or Maintenance of Certification (MOC) examinations. DME creates a “failure-free” learning environment that helps learners get back into the groove of test-taking. It is also useful as an interactive tool to gauge knowledge and comprehension related to the major tumor types.

“DME allows me to interject short learning bursts into my day when I have a moment. I love the mobile format and like seeing how my answers compare to others who have responded to the same question.” —Don Dizon, MD, Co-Chair of ASCO’s Integrated Media and Technology Committee and ASCOconnnection.org columnist
