From the JOP Editor’s Desk

Jul 19, 2012

By JOP Editor-in-Chief John V. Cox, DO, MBA

The July 2012 issue of the Journal of Oncology Practice (JOP) is the Journal’s largest issue yet, presenting more articles and total pages than any prior issue. Submissions to JOP are rising, content is of ever-higher quality, and the focus of the Journal to present information and data to guide practice is evermore clear. All content in JOP is peer-reviewed, undergoes exacting copyediting, and is presented in a common format that is recognizable as a JOP piece.

The fastest-growing element of the Journal has been that of Web-exclusive articles. A large segment of our readers access the Journal electronically, either through the use of electronic table of contents (eTOCs) sent to their email or through the Journal’s website. This allows a reader to scan the content of the Journal and pursue articles of interest. Growth in electronic content is bolstered by the realities of the rising cost of producing and mailing a print Journal. The future of the JOP (and of medical publishing) is electronically focused. Web-exclusive content from the July issue includes:

Health Care Delivery:

  • Stuver, et al.Factors Associated with Pain among Ambulatory Cancer Patients with Advanced Disease at a Comprehensive Cancer Center”
  • Schink, et al. “Barriers to the Use of Personalized Medicine in Breast Cancer”
  • Hwang, et al. “Low Rates of Hepatitis B Virus Screening at the Onset of Chemotherapy”
  • Cowall, et al. “End of Life Care at a Community Cancer Center”
  • Rowe, et al. “An Economic and Microbiologic Evaluation of Single Dose Vial Extension for Hazardous Drugs”

Health Policy:

  • Bullock, et al. “Understanding Patients’ Attitudes toward Communication about the Cost of Cancer Care”

Focus on Quality:

  • Temin, et al. “Appropriate Chemotherapy Dosing for Obese Adult Patients with Cancer: American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) Clinical Practice Guideline”; with commentary by Lyman
  • Hurley, et al. “Sentinel Lymph Node Biopsy for Melanoma: American Society of Clinical Oncology and Society of Surgical Oncology Joint Clinical Practice Guideline”; with commentary by Bilimoria
  • Sisler, et al.Concordance with ASCO Guidelines for Surveillance after Colorectal Cancer Treatment: A Population-Based Analysis”
  • Mayer, et al.Patient and Provider Preferences for Survivorship Care Plans”
  • Schnipper. “The Rising Cost of Cancer Care: Physicians Take Charge”

All JOP print and Web-exclusive content, including engaging podcasts, can be accessed by logging into JOP’s website (jop.ascopubs.org) or by accessing the Journal through mobile devices.
