Conquer Cancer Foundation Awards More than $5 Million to Promising Researchers

July 2012: TheConquer Cancer Foundation presented more than $5 million in grants andawards to more than 200 promising oncology researchers at the 2012 ASCOAnnual Meeting. The Conquer Cancer Foundation and ASCO congratulate the2012 grant and award recipients on their contributions to the field ofoncology and offer their profound thanks to all the generousorganizations that supported these awards.

Drug Development Research Professorship: Alex Adjei, MD, PhD, RoswellPark Cancer Institute
The Drug Development Research Professorship provides flexible fundingto outstanding researchers who have made, and are continuing to make,significant contributions that have changed the direction of cancerresearch.

Advanced Clinical Research Award in Breast Cancer: Janette Vardy, MD,PhD, the University of Sydney
The Advanced Clinical Research Award (ACRA) funds investigators, intheir fourth to ninth year of faculty appointment, who are committed toclinical cancer research in an area not currently funded.

Career Development Awards: The Career Development Award (CDA) providesfunding to clinical investigators, who have received their initialfaculty appointment, to establish an independent clinical cancerresearch program. This year’s 11 recipients will each receivea three-year grant totaling $200,000.View complete list of 2012 CDA recipients.

Young Investigator Awards: The Young Investigator Award (YIA) providesfunding to promising investigators to encourage and promote qualityresearch in clinical oncology. This year’s 43 awardees willeach receive a one-year grant of $50,000.View complete list of 2012 YIA recipients.

International Development and Education Award: The InternationalDevelopment and Education Award (IDEA) provides opportunities forearly-career oncologists in low- and middle-income countries toestablish long-term relationships with leading ASCO members who serveas scientific mentors to each recipient. This year, 24 awardees areparticipating in the IDEA program, including four oncologists with aninterest in palliative care.View complete list of 2012 IDEA recipients.

Long-term International Fellowship: The Long-term InternationalFellowship (LIFe) provides early-career oncologists in developingnations the support and resources needed to advance their trainingthrough a one-year fellowship with a U.S. or Canadian colleague at thecolleague’s institution. The recipients, in turn, bring theknowledge and skills gained through this training experience back totheir home country.View complete list of 2012 LIFe recipients.

Medical Student Rotation Award: The Medical Student Rotation (MSR) forUnderrepresented Populations provides eight- to 10-week clinical orclinical research oncology rotations for U.S. medical students frompopulations underrepresented in medicine who are interested in pursuingoncology as a career. Resident Travel Award: The Resident Travel Award (RTA) forUnderrepresented Populations provides financial support for residentsfrom underrepresented populations to attend ASCO’s AnnualMeeting.
