One of the challenges facing oncologists and other cancer care providers is the need to balance continuing education and our time (or lack thereof). Oncology is an ever-changing field, and what may have been standard treatments just 5 years ago could be out of date today, which is why it’s important to stay informed on current topics.
In the past, many of us have tried to pick and choose which high-quality live education sessions to attend—and subsequently put all of our other work duties on hold while we travel for several days. Any further gaps in our knowledge were often supplemented by journals and other literature. Reading these pieces saved us time and provided minimal interference with our work and personal lives, but they did not offer the benefit of live interaction with other professionals.
Having experienced these limitations with traditional learning myself, I was motivated when ASCO University approached me to be a faculty member for their new Interactive Board Review series. These live sessions, which are conducted online and also recorded for all participants to view on demand, are a great way to have the best of both worlds. Anyone with an internet connection can sign up and experience live discussions with other professionals in the field, all from the comfort of their home or office. They’re also reasonably priced ($80 for ASCO members, $100 for non-members).
More importantly, all of the questions covered in the Interactive Board Reviews are of the highest quality—many, in fact, are taken directly from the ASCO-SEP Online Question Bank or other ASCO University review courses. Each question is carefully selected by myself and the five other expert faculty members before presentation. This ensures that questions are up-to-date, evidence-based, and relevant to all participants—especially for those studying for their boards or MOC exams.
EDITOR’S NOTE: There is still time to sign up for the Fall 2012 series even if you missed the first live session on September 6th (covering Genitourinary Cancers, Breast Cancer, and Hematologic Malignancies). A capture of that session, along with the upcoming session on October 11th (covering Gastrointestinal Cancers, Lung Cancer, and Gynecologic Cancers) will be placed on ASCO University for future reference to all participants.
