Plus, ASCO journals expand open-access publishing options

ASCO’s Journal of Global of Oncology (JGO) is excited to announce the launch of its website. JGO is an online-only, openaccess journal focused on cancer care, research, and care delivery issues unique to countries and settings with limited health care resources. The website features full issues of JGO, a video with JGO founding Editor in Chief David Kerr, MD, DSc, and information for authors.

Open access: It doesn’t just mean free

Through the end of 2016, JGO will waive open-access article publishing charges (APCs) for all accepted articles thanks to funding received from various supporting organizations. Through the generosity of JGO’s organizational supporters, JGO will also waive or discount charges for authors based on their country of residence.

Remember, open access is not the same as “free access.” Free access usually means the article is available for viewing by anyone immediately upon publication. Open access has a broader scope. It provides free, immediate access to articles, but also deposits articles into a digital public archive and allows for unrestricted reuse.

Articles from JGO are immediately and freely available to the public upon online publication. The journal offers two “Gold” options for authors (see below).

Open-access options for JCO, JOP

ASCO’s other journals are also expanding their open-access options for authors. The Journal of Clinical Oncology (JCO) and the Journal of Oncology Practice (JOP) offer one “Green” and two “Gold” options for open access.

The Green option allows articles to be made publicly available on the journals’ websites for 6 months after publication, enabling users to read, download, and print the articles. This option also allows authors to archive published manuscripts in an institutional or funder repository. The Green option does come with some limitations: Articles are not automatically archived in PubMed Central, cannot be redistributed for noncommercial purposes, and cannot be sold or reused for commercial purposes. In addition, users cannot data-mine the articles and cannot reuse portions or extracts from the articles in other works.

The Gold options are less restrictive. One Gold option enables articles to be automatically archived in PubMed Central and allows users to read, download, and print articles, and to redistribute them for noncommercial purposes. In addition, authors can archive published manuscripts in an institutional or funder repository.

The second Gold option is the least restrictive. This option includes all of the allowances of the first Gold option, and also allows users to reuse parts of the article for other works, to reuse the article for commercial purposes, and to mine the data. Both of the Gold openaccess options allow articles to be made publicly available on the journals’ websites immediately upon publication. Visit the JCO website and select Information for Authors to learn more about these publishing options.
