ASCO Honors Dr. John V. Cox With 2021 Joseph V. Simone Award

Dr. John V. Cox headshotASCO will recognize John V. Cox, DO, MBA, FACP, FASCO, a medical oncologist and professor at the University of Texas (UT) Southwestern, with the Joseph V. Simone Award and Lecture for Excellence in Quality and Safety in the Care of Patients With Cancer. Dr. Cox will be presented with the award at the 2021 ASCO Quality Care Symposium, taking place on September 24-25 in Boston.

"Dr. Cox’s career has been dedicated to ensuring the delivery of high-quality cancer care for all patients,” said Gabrielle Rocque, MD, MSPH, FASCO, chair of the 2021 ASCO Quality Care Symposium Planning Committee. “Because of individuals like him, we will continue to see innovations in the cancer care delivery system."

Dr. Cox is a practicing medical oncologist in Dallas, TX, where he currently serves as medical director of oncology services at Parkland Health System. He joined the institution in 2015 and has led its participation in the Center for Medicare and Medicaid (CMS) Oncology Care Model. Prior to joining Parkland Health System, Dr. Cox was in private practice in Dallas for over 25 years. His research interests focus on gastrointestinal cancers and mechanisms of care delivery, particularly the transformation work that is necessary for oncology practice to embrace new payment models.

Dr. Cox is a member of ASCO’s Clinical Practice Committee and remains active in ASCO’s efforts to evaluate and codify new practice models. He also resides on the Texas Society of Medical Oncology’s Board of Directors. As a dedicated member of ASCO, Dr. Cox has held numerous volunteer positions, including chair of the ASCO Annual Meeting Education Committee, editor-in-chief of JCO Oncology Practice, chair of the Health Information Technology Workgroup, member of the Ethics Committee, member for the Journal of Clinical Oncology editorial board, and mentor for ASCO’s Leadership Development Program.  

Dr. Cox has served on multiple panels, workgroups, and taskforces focusing on questions of care delivery, including CMS’ Medicare Evidence Development and Coverage Advisory Committee, ASCO’s Payment Reform Workgroup, the American College of Physicians’ Council of Sub-Specialty Societies workgroup on the Patient-Centered Medical Home Neighbor, and  the advisory committees to the National Committee for Quality Assurance, where he aided in the development of the Patient Centered Specialty Practice and Oncology Medical Home Recognition programs.  

The Joseph V. Simone Award and Lecture for Excellence in Quality and Safety in the Care of Patients With Cancer was established in 2016 and created in honor of Joseph V. Simone, MD, FASCO, to recognize his significant and enduring contributions to the quality and safety of cancer care. Dr. Simone contributed to the development of curative treatments for childhood leukemia and lymphoma and supported the creation of ASCO's Quality Oncology Practice Initiative (QOPI®). This award recognizes visionary oncology care providers who excel in quality care.
