Though the MOC process can, at times, seem cumbersome, ASCO strives to support its members by offering a variety of self-assessment resources to help meet MOC requirements. ASCO University® currently offers five medical knowledge self-evaluation modules on breast cancer, gastrointestinal cancers, genitourinary cancers, lung cancer, and ethics. Each module consists of 25 multiple-choice questions with rationales and educational links to further reading. All of the MOC modules are developed by member experts using emerging science and current standards of care presented in the Journal of Clinical Oncology and other relevant sources. Upon completion of each module with a minimum passing score of 75%, participants can earn 10 MOC points in self-evaluation of medical knowledge. Participants can also earn CME credit for each completed MOC module.
The newly launched Ethics MOC Module is unique in that it is ASCO’s first non-clinical MOC activity. The module addresses ethical principles as they relate to patient care, and question categories in this module include advance directives, informed consent, genetics, and end-of-life issues. Although some of the questions include case presentations of patients with cancer, the testing points are focused on the ethical principles surrounding the case and don’t necessarily deal with treatment options specific to oncology. The module was developed in this manner to appeal to a broader audience and be more attractive to practitioners in other subspecialties.
“The MOC courses are valuable because they are written by experts in the field and are presented in a truly clinical manner with case-based learning,” says Lucille A. Leong, MD, Chair of the ASCO CME Subcommittee. “The cases are very representative of what on oncologist might see in practice. It is clear that major effort is made to keep these modules up to date and relevant for the clinician.”
ASCO will continue to develop medical knowledge MOC modules to provide an even greater array of resources for its members. Future MOC module topics include geriatric oncology, gynecologic cancers, leukemia/lymphoma, and palliative care/end-of-life issues.
At the upcoming 2012 Annual Meeting, ASCO staff will be available in the Oncology Professionals Hall: ASCO Central to provide module demonstrations and clarify questions about the MOC process. Interested members are encouraged to stop by and take advantage of this opportunity.
