Tune in to a New Season of Your Stories: Conquering Cancer

May 03, 2021

“Medicine is a science, and it is an art,” said Don S. Dizon, MD, FACP, FASCO.

Storytelling is also an art for Dr. Dizon, a Brown University professor and breast and pelvic oncologist at Rhode Island Hospital. Dr. Dizon is among the hosts for the latest season of the podcast Your Stories: Conquering Cancer, produced by Conquer Cancer, the ASCO Foundation.

The series showcases conversations between people within the cancer community—including doctors, researchers, patients, caregivers—who candidly share their experiences to connect with others who have been impacted by cancer. This season, three hosts are leading these conversations: Dr. Dizon, Ms. Brenda Brody, a breast cancer survivor and patient advocate, and Mark A. Lewis, MD, a gastrointestinal oncologist at Intermountain Healthcare who self-diagnosed his multiple endocrine neoplasia type 1 (MEN1). Topics will include mentorship among survivors, advocating for new treatments, and coping with cancer recurrence.

Conquer Cancer created the podcast in 2017 as a resource for patients, but the stories have resonated with a wider audience. Dr. Dizon believes the conversations, which often feature ASCO members and Conquer Cancer researchers, will take listeners beyond the science of cancer care to offer better insight into oncology’s emotional side.

“I hope by sharing stories in the podcast, we realize that oncologists are more than just clinicians—that as time passes and we get to know our patients and their families, that we become invested in their doing well,” said Dr. Dizon.
