Dr. Anne C. Chiang Honored With 2020 Joseph V. Simone Award

Jun 15, 2020

ASCO will recognize Anne C. Chiang, MD, PhD, FASCO, a medical oncologist and assistant professor at Yale University School of Medicine, with the Joseph V. Simone Award and Lecture for Excellence in Quality and Safety in the Care of Patients With Cancer. Dr. Chiang will be presented with the award at the 2020 Virtual ASCO Quality Care Symposium, taking place October 9-10.

“Anne’s dedication and commitment to quality cancer care has contributed to the creation of many quality-focused initiatives that have significantly enhanced how cancer care is delivered,” said Dawn L. Hershman, MD, MS, FASCO, chair of the 2020 Quality Care Symposium Planning Committee.

Dr. Chiang currently serves as the associate chief medical officer and chief network officer for Smilow Cancer Hospital in New Haven, Connecticut. She has played a significant role in establishing the highest standards of quality and safety for cancer care. Through her efforts, Smilow Cancer Hospital is one of a handful of large academic networks that has achieved ASCO QOPI (Quality Oncology Practice Initiative) certification. She also established a community pilot of the ASCO Quality Training Program within Smilow.

As a dedicated member of ASCO, Dr. Chiang’s service dates back to 2012 when she joined the Quality of Care Committee (QCC), and 2013 when she co-chaired the Patient-Reported Outcomes Workgroup within the QOPI Certification Program (QCP) and Measures Task Force in 2013. She went on to become chair of the QCC in 2015. Today, she continues to serve as a member of the QCC, the Measures Steering Group (including serving as the QOPI Steering Group liaison), and the Quality Training Program. Since its creation in June of 2017, Dr. Chiang has led the Quality Publications Task Force, which helps increase the awareness and impact of QCC activities by generating publications using QOPI and QCP data.

The Joseph V. Simone Award and Lecture for Excellence in Quality and Safety in the Care of Patients With Cancer was established in 2016 and created in honor of Joseph V. Simone, MD, FASCO, to recognize his significant and enduring contributions to the quality and safety of cancer care. Dr. Simone contributed to the development of curative treatments for childhood leukemia and lymphoma and supported the creation of ASCO's Quality Oncology Practice Initiative (QOPI®). The award recognizes visionary oncology care providers who excel in the area of quality care.
