Conquer Cancer, the ASCO Foundation, is pleased to announce the recipients of its awards supporting researchers with projects that span many areas of cancer care, including precision medicine, palliative care, and breast cancer. These awards will be given in conjunction with the 2022 ASCO Annual Meeting being held in Chicago, IL, on June 3-7. Conquer Cancer Grants & Awards support oncology professionals at every career stage, medical students, and residents to help accelerate research breakthroughs and build an oncology workforce that more fully represents the diversity of individuals with cancer. At the 2022 ASCO Annual Meeting, more than $12 million will be awarded to more than 400 recipients representing 32 countries around the world.

Burris III, MD, FACP, FASCO. “While these grants and awards provide funding to explore inventive ideas and opportunities to build meaningful careers, they also offer great hope to our patients.”

Advanced Clinical Research Awards for Diversity and Inclusion in Breast Cancer

The Advanced Clinical Research Award (ACRA) for Diversity and Inclusion aims to increase diversity in the oncology workforce and breast cancer research. The 2022 Conquer Cancer - Breast Cancer Research Foundation^® ACRA recipients are Rachel Jimenez, MD, of Massachusetts General Hospital, and Samilia Obeng-Gyasi, MD, MPH, of Ohio State University. Dr. Jimenez will receive $450,000 to further the project “A Randomized Clinical Trial to Study the Impact of Emerging Radiation Techniques on Cardiac Injury in the Treatment of Women With Breast Cancer,” and Dr. Obeng-Gyasi will receive $450,000 to further the project “Examining Allostatic Load as a Mediator of the Relationship Between Genetic Ancestry and Treatment Completion.”

Research Professorship for Diversity and Inclusion in Breast Cancer

The Research Professorship for Diversity and Inclusion in Breast Cancer provides flexible funding to an outstanding researcher who has made and is continuing to make significant contributions that have changed the direction of breast cancer research and who provides mentorship to junior researchers. The 2022 Conquer Cancer - Breast Cancer Research Foundation^® Research Professorship recipient is Mylin A. Torres, MD, of Emory University. Dr. Torres will receive $500,000 over the next 5 years to further the project “Genetic Determinants of Treatment-Related Comorbidities, Poor Treatment Adherence, and Worse Survival Among Black Patients With Early-Stage Breast Cancer.”

Career Development Awards

The Career Development Award (CDA) is a 3-year grant that funds clinical investigators in the first to third year of faculty appointment to establish an independent clinical cancer research program. At the 2022 ASCO Annual Meeting, 21 promising clinicians will be presented with CDAs.

Young Investigator Awards

The Young Investigator Award (YIA) provides research funding to promising young physicians during the final years of training to support the transition to a faculty appointment and to encourage quality research in clinical oncology. At the 2022 ASCO Annual Meeting, 95 investigators were selected to receive YIAs.

Global Oncology Young Investigator Awards

The Global Oncology Young Investigator Award (GO YIA) provides research funding to early-career investigators to encourage and promote quality research in global oncology and to develop the next generation of researchers to address global health needs. At the 2022 ASCO Annual Meeting, five investigators were selected to receive GO YIAs.

International Development and Education Awards

The International Development and Education Award (IDEA) provides support for early-career oncologists in low- and middle-income countries and facilitates the sharing of knowledge between these oncologists and ASCO members who serve as scientific mentors to each recipient. This year, eight early-career oncologists will be awarded with IDEAs.

International Development and Education Awards in Palliative Care

The International Development and Education Award in Palliative Care (IDEA-PC) provides medical education in palliative care, assists with career development, and helps establish strong relationships with leading ASCO members in the field of palliative care who serve as scientific mentors to each recipient. This year, three researchers will be awarded with IDEA-PCs.

Medical Student Rotation for Underrepresented Populations

The Medical Student Rotation (MSR) provides support for clinical or clinical research oncology rotations to U.S. medical students from populations underrepresented in medicine who are interested in pursuing oncology as a career. This year, 28 students will be awarded with MSRs.

Annual Meeting Research Awards

The Annual Meeting Research Award (AMRA) offers an opportunity for non-oncology medical residents from populations underrepresented in medicine to meet oncologists at the ASCO Annual Meeting and to learn more about career options in the field of oncology. This year, eight recipients will receive the AMRA.
