Among his many scientific achievements, Dr. Vogelzang will be remembered for his leadership on the clinical trials that led to the approvals of pemetrexed in combination with cisplatin for mesothelioma and abiraterone in combination with prednisone for metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer, bringing renewed hope to patients with these diseases.

Dr. Vogelzang was deeply engaged with ASCO throughout his career, serving on the Board of Directors from 1993-1996 and as chair of the Cancer Communications Committee from 2011-2012. He was a member of the Cancer.Net Editorial Board, a track leader on the Annual Meeting Education Committee and the Annual Meeting Scientific Program Committee, and served on a number of expert panels related to genitourinary cancers, among other volunteer service to the Society.

Dr. Vogelzang co-founded the Kidney Cancer Association (KCA) in 1990, and served on the organization’s Board of Directors from its founding until his retirement in March 2022. In 2010 he was honored with KCA’s Eugene P. Schonfeld Award for his contributions and advocacy in the field of kidney cancer.

He was also highly active in the SWOG Cancer Research Network, having served for over 14 years as chair of the cooperative group’s Genitourinary (GU) Committee. Shortly before his passing, SWOG announced two initiatives to honor his legacy: the Nicholas J. Vogelzang, MD, Scholarship to support a young investigator, and the Nicholas J.
