ASCO President-Elect Dr. Eric Winer Takes on New Leadership Role at Yale Cancer Center

Oct 21, 2021

ASCO president-elect Eric Winer, MD, FASCO, has accepted a new role as director of the Yale Cancer Center—a National Cancer Institute (NCI)-Designated Cancer Center—and physician-in-chief of Smilow Cancer Hospital at Yale New Haven, that will begin February 1, 2022.

“We are thrilled for Dr. Winer as he assumes this new leadership role and we know that the Yale Cancer Center will be in very good hands under his direction,” said ASCO CEO Clifford A. Hudis, MD, FACP, FASCO.

Dr. Winer has been an active ASCO member and a leader within the organization for over 30 years, serving on and chairing numerous committees and the Board of Directors. He is exemplary of the most sought-after experts in oncology research and patient care who volunteer with ASCO. Like other ASCO volunteers, he balances a busy clinical practice, cancer center management, academic appointments, research, publishing, and professional society participation.

“My years as a member of ASCO and experience serving the Society in numerous positions have helped me acquire the broad knowledge and perspective in oncology needed as I fulfill my new role leading the cancer center at Yale,” said Dr. Winer.

Dr. Winer will assume the role of ASCO president following the ASCO Annual Meeting in June 2022, as Everett E. Vokes, MD, FASCO, rotates out of this role and into that of chair of the ASCO Board of Directors.

“My commitment to ASCO is stronger than ever, and I am very much looking forward to serving as president of my professional Society and its membership when my term begins next year,” Dr. Winer said.

Dr. Winer received his MD from Yale University and later completed training in internal medicine and served as chief resident at Yale-New Haven Hospital. He subsequently was a fellow in hematology-oncology at Duke University Medical Center, serving on the Duke faculty for 8 years and becoming codirector of the multidisciplinary breast program. In 1997, he joined Brigham and Women's Hospital and Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, where he is currently director of the Breast Oncology Center, the Thompson Chair in Breast Cancer Research, chief clinical development officer, and senior vice president for medical affairs. He is also a professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School.

In addition to his volunteer work at ASCO, Winer has published more than 350 original manuscripts and has served as the principal investigator of a National Institutes of Health-funded SPORE in Breast Cancer for the last 10 years. He is a member of the Scientific Advisory Board of the Breast Cancer Research Foundation and chief scientific advisor and chair of the Scientific Advisory Board for Susan G. Komen for the Cure. He also currently co-leads the National Cancer Institute Breast Cancer Steering Committee.
