My involvement in ASCO has made me keenly aware of just how important it is to be involved in the shaping of health care policy. The decisions that are made by our elected representatives and policymakers in regulatory agencies directly and profoundly impact our ability to provide the highest quality care for our patients.

The cancer care delivery system is experiencing a seismic shift and it’s critical that we, as oncologists, have a seat at the table to ensure that, as issues are debated, policy decisionmakers fully understand the current realities of oncology practice.

That is why I am such an ardent supporter of ASCO’s Health Policy Leadership Development Program (HP-LDP), formally known as the Health Policy Fellowship.

This initiative reflects ASCO’s commitment to groom the next generation of ASCO volunteer leaders to effectively advocate for policies that will ensure that any individual who faces a cancer diagnosis will have access to high-quality cancer care.

I write today to urge you to consider the opportunity for yourself or for a colleague. This unique experience will help you develop the skills and experience necessary to help shape cancer care policy in an increasingly complicated cancer care delivery environment. It is a 1-year program that provides an opportunity for ASCO members to develop expertise in health policy, advocacy, and grassroots activity. The HP-LDP requires a 1-year commitment that includes regular travel to ASCO and participation in meetings. The time commitment for travel and meeting participation is estimated to be an average of one week per month.

Starting this coming year, participants in this program will also be full members of the ASCO Leadership Development Program, which provides additional opportunities to gain valuable leadership skills and mentorship from ASCO leaders.

The HP-LDP is open to all ASCO members in the United States who completed their final subspecialty training between 2009 and 2014, and provides participants:

  • Practical experience crafting policy positions and statements.
  • Small-group teaching sessions delivered by an executive leadership coach, ASCO professional staff, and qualified volunteers.
  • A mentored project that advances an ASCO policy initiative.

This program’s application period closes on September 25. Please consider this unique opportunity for yourself or pass along this information to a colleague. Thank you.
