ASCO to Present Douglas W. Blayney, MD, FASCO, with Joseph V. Simone Award and Lecture

May 10, 2018

ASCO will recognize Douglas W. Blayney, MD, FASCO, a medical oncologist and professor at Stanford University School of Medicine, with the Joseph V. Simone Award and Lecture for Excellence in Quality and Safety in the Care of Patients with Cancer. Dr. Blayney will be presented with the award at the 2018 ASCO Quality Care Symposium taking place September 28-29, in Phoenix, Arizona.

"Better, safer, cheaper. Each time we sit across the exam table with a cancer patient, we are freshly aware that each one deserves the best, safest, and most accessible care. As individuals and physicians, we can’t lose sight of this goal, and as innovators and leaders of cancer care systems, we must have our eye on this prize,” said Dr. Blayney. “As the number of cancer survivors around the world continues to grow, we must create and maintain a high-quality cancer care system to support our patients from the beginning stages throughout their survivorship. I look forward to discussing these themes at this year’s Quality Care Symposium. It is my privilege to receive this honor named after a remarkable colleague whom we admire for prioritizing quality and safety his entire career."

The Joseph V. Simone Award, established in 2016, recognizes individuals who have contributed significantly to the quality and safety of cancer care. Named after Joseph V. Simone, MD, FASCO, the award is intended to both recognize the awardee and honor its namesake, a visionary pioneer in cancer care who contributed to the development of curative treatments for childhood leukemia and lymphoma and who was instrumental in the creation of ASCO's Quality Oncology Practice Initiative (QOPI®), among other career accomplishments.

"Dr. Blayney is a driving force for improving the quality of cancer care," said Monika K. Krzyzanowska, MD, MPH, Chair of the 2018 Quality Care Symposium Program Committee. "A dedicated oncologist whose career has been committed to delivering high-quality care to patients, Dr. Blayney embodies the very essence of the Joseph V. Simone Award. Like Dr. Simone, Dr. Blayney has contributed to the creation of many quality-focused initiatives that have significantly improved how cancer care is delivered. It’s with individuals like these that we will continue to see advances in the cancer care system."

Dr. Blayney previously served as the medical director of both Stanford Cancer Center and the Comprehensive Cancer Center at the University of Michigan. Prior to these roles, he worked as an oncologist and hematologist in private practice for 17 years at Wilshire Oncology Medical Group in California.

During his tenure as ASCO President from 2009 to 2010, Dr. Blayney helped to initiate the ASCO Quality Care Symposium and the QOPI Certification Program™, envisioned ASCO’s big data initiative CancerLinQ®, and co-authored the ASCO Value Framework. He was also the founding editor in chief of ASCO’s Journal of Oncology Practice.

In recognition of his dedication to whole-person oncology care, Dr. Blayney was selected as the inaugural recipient of the National Coalition for Cancer Survivorship’s Ellen Stovall Award for Leadership in Patient-Centered Care in 2016. He also served on the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s Oncologic Drugs Advisory Committee.
