Fill Your Oncology Knowledge Gaps With ASCO University Self-Assessment Tools

Apr 25, 2018

ASCO University offers a variety of self-assessment resources, available for purchase from the ASCO University Bookstore, that feature up-to-date and practice-relevant questions written by ASCO expert faculty and edited by peer reviewers. All questions provide the correct answer as well as an answer rationale including references that support the best answer. Not only does regular self-assessment provide meaningful learning, it also helps to identify—and remedy—any knowledge gaps.

Personalized Learning Dashboard

The ASCO University Personalized Learning Dashboard was designed for learners who want an individualized educational approach.

Learners begin the self-assessment by designating their media preferences for videos, text-based articles, audio podcasts, or eLearning courses. After taking a 60-question assessment, the learner receives two scores: an actual score based on right and wrong answers, and an adjusted score that accounts for the learner’s level of confidence in their responses. This generates the learner’s personalized dashboard, indicating knowledge gaps and allowing them to study from a list of the recommended educational resources in those topics.

Most materials are taken from ASCO content, including articles from ASCO journals and the ASCO Educational Book, Meeting Library videos and slides, ASCO University eLearning courses, and podcasts. At any time, learners can take a post-assessment to check their progress.

ASCO-SEP 6th Edition

ASCO-SEP® is a comprehensive resource designed to help providers assess their level of knowledge in the various areas of oncology. It outlines the current understanding of cancer, its treatment, and the supportive care needed to optimize quality of life for people with cancer.

ASCO-SEP 6th Edition features a new chapter on Genetic Testing for Hereditary Cancer Syndromes and an expanded chapter on Principles of Immuno-Oncology and Biologic Therapy. In addition, the 6th edition features more than 190 new self-assessment questions from the 22 chapters, as well as an online mock exam with more than 120 original self-assessment questions not found in the book. Questions feature practical scenarios, predominantly in a patient case-based format, and provide detailed rationales and supporting references. Upon successful completion of both the ASCO-SEP book self-assessment questions and the mock exam, participants may request Continuing Medical Education, American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM) Maintenance of Certification (MOC), Nursing, and Pharmacy credit through online modules.

App-Based Courses

ASCO’s MOC app-based courses offer an easy and convenient way to earn ABIM MOC points. These courses allow for easy access to self-assessment questions: the app sends notifications every other day with a selection of course questions. Multiple-choice questions based on topics outlined in the ABIM medical oncology blueprint include a wide variety of general oncology topics; the app includes patient case information, educational links, and answer rationales.

“This simple, bite-sized ASCO MOC app for my smartphone has helped satisfy my remaining MOC point requirements,” said Dean H. Gesme, MD, FACP, FASCO. “It allowed me to download multiple-choice questions that I could then answer, with immediate feedback on my answers. I was able to accomplish this by simply spending 5 to 10 minutes a day on the app.”

The app is available to download from Google Play, the Apple App Store, and the ASCO University Bookstore. For more information on self-assessment resources from ASCO, visit university.asco.org or email ascou@asco.org.
