HIMSS recommends Obama invest $25 billion in HIT

Posted: December 17, 2008 - 5:59 am EDT

The Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society called on the incoming Obama administration to allot a minimum of $25 billion in federal funding for qualified health information technology and to expand such investment to Medicaid and the State Children’s Health Insurance Program.
The recommendations, part of HIMSS’ A Call for Action: Enabling Healthcare Reform Using Information Technology, were made in advance of an expected strong push by the White House and Congress toward a broad remake of the current healthcare system.

“We are convinced that moving forward with health IT now will not only be critical to ensuring sustainable positive change for consumers, but will also provide an immediate economic stimulus in the way of new jobs across the healthcare sector,” HIMSS President and Chief Executive Officer Stephen Lieber said in a written statement.

Other recommendations include expanding the current Stark exemptions and anti-kickback rules for electronic health records to cover additional healthcare software and related devices and to create a senior-level health IT czar within the administration.

The Chicago-based HIMSS also called for the creation of a federal advisory committee that would advise the administration on health IT-related initiatives. --
