Dear Colleagues:

I am pleased to share with you the second installment in our preview of ASCO’s 2012 Annual Meeting, which includes an introduction to the scientific sessions by Scientific Program Committee Chair Ronald Levy, MD. Together, Dr. Levy and the Committee members have worked diligently to put together a program that will enable oncology professionals to bring the latest research back to their respective practices and institutions.

Ultimately it’s the presenters, faculty, and attendees who bring the Meeting to life, and I encourage you to join the excitement by taking advantage of the many opportunities to discuss, debate, network, and participate directly in the Meeting using the latest interactive tools and resources. It is this kind of interaction that will help us fulfill this year’s important theme, “Collaborating to Conquer Cancer,” eloquently described by ASCO President Michael P. Link, MD, in his post.

The practice-changing research emerging from the Annual Meeting is only part of ASCO’s ground-breaking efforts. ASCO has recently joined the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM) Foundation and eight other medical specialty societies in an effort to improve patient care and address increasing health-care costs through the Choosing Wisely® campaign, which identifies procedures that are “common, costly, and not supported by evidence.”

While perusing this issue, please be sure to read the excellent debate on the National Cancer Institute Prostate, Lung, Colorectal, and Ovarian (PLCO) Cancer Screening Trial. The passionate viewpoints expressed by Drs. Raghavan MD and Catalona well reflect this ongoing controversy.

In closing, I would like to thank two ASCO Connection Editorial Board members who have moved on to new areas of service for ASCO—Dr. Melissa Hudson and Dr. Antonio Wolff. Their considerable talents and expertise have enriched the member magazine, and I wish them the best in their new endeavors. All endings bring new beginnings, and as such, I am happy to announce our two newest Editorial Board members, Dr. Susan Cohn and Dr. Hope Rugo. Please read more about them in our Member News section.

Thanks for reading and see you at the Annual Meeting.
