Jamie H. Von Roenn, MD, Joins ASCO as Head of Education, Science and Professional Development

Jamie H. Von Roenn, MD, Professor of Medicine at the Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, has been named as the Senior Director of ASCO’s Education, Science and Professional Development Department. A longtime ASCO member and volunteer, Dr. Von Roenn is a medical oncologist and expert in breast oncology and palliative medicine, particularly on the integration of palliative medicine skills and principles into oncology care. She will begin her new position on September 23.

Lichter, MD, Chief Executive Officer of ASCO. “Dr. Von Roenn has served ASCO in numerous capacities over the years, especially in the areas of education and professional development. Having her as the physician staff leader in this position will enable us to better understand and interpret the educational needs of physicians and other clinicians in the rapidly changing world of clinical oncology. We can leverage her medical knowledge, in collaboration with our volunteers, to design innovative programs for the benefit of all ASCO members. I look forward to welcoming and working with her to enhance ASCO’s leadership in the delivery of cutting-edge education and professional development services.”

As the Senior Director of the Education, Science and Professional Development Department, Dr. Von Roenn will provide strategic vision and operational leadership for the planning, development, implementation, and evaluation of a broad array of innovative education programs that serve the needs of ASCO members and constituents, including the ASCO Annual Meeting, thematic meetings, workshops, and continuing medical education offerings.

“I have been fortunate to serve ASCO in a volunteer capacity for more than 15 years, and I am pleased to now be joining the Society on a permanent basis,” said Dr. Von Roenn. “I look forward to collaborating with ASCO volunteers, the ASCO Board of Directors, and ASCO staff to ensure the development of high-quality educational content. Together, we will leverage our resources to produce new and exciting ways of making this important content available to our members and others in the oncology world.”

Since joining ASCO in 1986, Dr. Von Roenn has dedicated her time and talents to the Society through her active service and leadership. She has served on the ASCO Board of Directors; the ASCO Palliative Care Task Force; the Scientific Program, Cancer Education, and Cancer Communications Committees, among others; the Cancer.Net Editorial Board; the ASCO Connection Editorial Board; and the Leadership Development Working Group. She is also an ASCOconnection.org columnist, a Fellow of ASCO, and a previous ASCO-ACS Special Award recipient.

Dr. Von Roenn is board certified in internal medicine, medical oncology, and palliative medicine. Her clinical and research interests focus on breast cancer and palliative care, particularly the impact of treatment on disease-related symptoms. She has previously served as Director of the Palliative Medicine Fellowship Training Program at Northwestern, spearheading efforts throughout Northwestern to incorporate palliative medicine into the medical school curriculum and internal medicine residency training. She also focuses on training medical oncologists to integrate palliative medicine principles and practices into oncology, serving as the Chair of the annual Chicago Supportive Oncology Conference, an editor of the Education in Palliative and End-of-Life Care in Oncology curriculum, and as a leadership coach at the San Diego Palliative Care Institute, International Fellows Leadership Development Program. She has also focused her efforts on developing palliative care services worldwide, serving on several working groups and as faculty for international-focused education courses.

Dr. Von Roenn also serves on the editorial board of several oncology journals, including the Journal of Cancer Pain & Symptom Palliation and the Journal of Cancer Survivorship. She previously served as Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Supportive Oncology and on the editorial board of ASCO’s Journal of Clinical Oncology. She is a past board member of the American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Medicine and the American Board of Internal Medicine. She has served on numerous committees on breast cancer and palliative care.

Dr. Von Roenn received her bachelor’s degree from the University of Illinois and her medical degree from Rush Medical College. She trained in internal medicine at Presbyterian/St. Luke's Medical Center in Chicago, Illinois.
