World Cancer Day comes but once a year. On February 4 we are prompted to think about how we can unite against cancer not just within our local neighborhoods, but as part of the global community. As cancer continues to threaten an increasing number of lives in low- and middle- income countries (LMICs), I say one day is not enough.
One of the key themes of World Cancer Day 2016 is Work Together for Increased Impact. The National Cancer Institute (NCI) Center for Global Health (CGH) understands the strength that comes with collaboration. Partnership is the cornerstone of our work, and through strategic coordination with other NCI divisions, NCI-designated cancer centers, nonprofit organizations, and U.S. and foreign governments, CGH supports cancer control planning, builds capacity, and strengthens cancer research and cancer research networks in LMICs.
WE CAN work together across regions and across borders to promote cancer prevention and cancer control. WE CAN build international partnerships and quality cancer workforces in every corner of the world. I CAN maintain my commitment to lead NCI’s global efforts and work every day to inspire action that brings an end to this devastating disease.

Dr. Trimble is the Director of the National Cancer Institute Center for Global Health. Prior to this appointment, Dr. Trimble was Head of Gynecologic Cancer Therapeutics in NCI’s Division of Cancer Treatment and Diagnosis.
