As Saturday at the Annual Meeting has now come to a close, I would like to share a few thoughts:
-In his Presidential Address, Dr. Sledge noted that cancer deaths are decreasing in the US; however, by the year 2030, it is projected the number of cancer deaths worldwide will exceed a staggering 11 million. Although the challenges of health care delivery both nationally and internationally seem daunting at times, this humbling figure emphasizes there is yet much work to be done to eradicate the menace that is cancer.
-In his lecture as the Karnofsky Award recipient, Dr. Anderson underscored the importance of working collaboratively and clearly illustrated how doing so has had substantial impact on the care of patients with multiple myeloma. He also shared some thoughts that have been part of his constitution over the course of his practice, including encouraging us to learn from and be inspired by our patients. I appreciate his sharing the personal side of his work as much as the progress in the understanding and treatment of multiple myeloma.
-In the education session on Nonphysician Providers in Oncology, Elaine Towle shared findings from the ASCO Study of Collaborative Practice Arrangements (SCPA), which indicated that patients are highly satisfied with a collaborative care model. Furthermore, the study showed that Physicians and Nonphysician Providers (NPPs) alike are also very satisfied working in this setting. Shirley Shuster, APRN, BC, OCN, went on to discuss her practice's experience in the successful implementation of a thriving NPP program, which has both improved the delivery of cancer care in their practice and likewise demonstrated the high-satisfaction rates of patients and practitioners seen in the SCPA.
These were just a few of many great moments at the Annual Meeting on Saturday. I am looking forward to what Sunday has in store!
