By W. Charles Penley, MD, FASCO
Chair, Conquer Cancer Foundation Board of Directors
I was delighted to discover Dr. Robert J. Mayer and Dr. Gabriel N. Hortobagyi, both members of the Conquer Cancer Foundation (CCF) Board of Directors and past ASCO Presidents, were named as distinguished members of the OncLive 2015 Giants in Cancer class.
The Giants in Cancer award is given yearly to a short but prestigious list of doctors and scientists whose work has significantly advanced oncology care and patient success.
Dr. Mayer, who was ASCO President in 1997, was lauded for his treatment approaches to colon, rectal, and pancreatic cancer. He is Director of the Center for Gastrointestinal Oncology and Vice President for Academic Affairs in the Department of Medical Oncology at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. Dr. Mayer is the Co-Chair of CCF’s The Campaign to Conquer Cancer.
Dr. Hortobagyi was recognized for his outstanding work in breast cancer treatment, specifically the use of chemotherapy before surgery. He is a Professor of Medicine in the Department of Breast Medical Oncology and the Nellie B. Connally Chair in Breast Cancer at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center. Dr. Hortobagyi served as ASCO President from 2006-2007.

Freireich, and ASCO members Dr. Robert C. Bast Jr., Dr. John Minna, Dr. Harold P. Freeman, Dr. Maha H. Hussain, Dr. Carl H. June, Dr. Clara D. Bloomfield, and Dr. Charles L. Loprinzi.
I am very proud to call both Bob and Gabriel friends and fellow Conquerors, and I deeply appreciate their contributions to the work of the CCF Board. Please join me in sending best wishes to them for this noteworthy career achievement.
