Beginnings and Endings

Beginnings and Endings

Jonathan S. Berek, MD, MMedSc, FASCO

Jun 29, 2016

I began serving as Editor in Chief of ASCO Connection in 2006, and will conclude my second term in December 2016. It has been—and is!—a pleasure to lead our member publication, and it will be hard to say goodbye at the end of the year.

Happily, I will be leaving ASCO Connection in the excellent hands of incoming Editor in Chief Dr. Linda R. Duska. She is the Associate Dean of Clinical Research at the University of Virginia School of Medicine, as well as a Professor and Gynecologic Oncology Fellowship Director at that institution. She will bring a range of professional experience to the role, including expertise in medical and surgical oncology, clinical research, palliative care, public health, and academic publishing. Since joining ASCO in 1999, she has served on the Cancer Education and Public Issues Committees, as a faculty member at ASCO Annual Meetings, and as a blogger for ASCOconnection.org.

You will have the pleasure of getting to know Dr. Duska in future issues of ASCO Connection before her term begins on January 1, 2017.

We celebrate other endings and beginnings in our July 2016 issue.

Although the ASCO Annual Meeting has come to a close, I encourage you to be inspired again by 2015-2016 President Dr. Julie M. Vose’s Presidential Address. We welcome 2016-2017 President Dr. Daniel F. Hayes and ASCO CEO Dr. Clifford A. Hudis, who began their new roles this month. I encourage you to visit Dr. Hayes' blog here on ASCOconnection.org to share your thoughts in the comments.

For members who are just beginning their oncology careers and interviewing for their first jobs, practical tips from physician recruiter Stephanie Hutchens will help you assess whether an open position is a good fit for you. Asking the right questions is key!
