Dec 20, 2016

ALEXANDRIA, Va. – To address the changing oncology workforce and educational needs of the cancer care team, the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) has been awarded Joint Accreditation by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME), the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE), and the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC). This status signifies that ASCO is simultaneously accredited to provide medicine, pharmacy, and/or nursing continuing education (CE) programs for health care professionals. ASCO is the largest medical specialty society to achieve Joint Accreditation status.

“From our founding to today ASCO has been dedicated to providing the best possible educational experiences for oncology care providers and researchers in support of our ultimate goal of improving the delivery and quality of patient care,” said Clifford Hudis, MD, FASCO, chief executive officer of ASCO. “Achieving Joint Accreditation status reflects ASCO’s steadfast commitment to high-quality accredited professional education.”

ASCO’s 2015 State of Cancer Care in America report showed that nearly 75% of oncology practices include advanced practice providers, demonstrating a need for the Society to expand its oncology educational offerings.

“The cancer care team has evolved, and ASCO supports the application of team-based care in oncology,” said Leora Horn, MD, chair of ASCO’s CME Subcommittee. “With that in mind, we recognized that Joint Accreditation would be an essential step to promote quality team-based care. The Joint Accreditation distinction is an exciting milestone.  Now cancer care teams can look to ASCO for a wide range of CME and CE offerings to support their varying needs.”

ASCO has been an accredited provider of continuing medical education since 1977. The Society’s comprehensive CE program is designed to help oncology providers acquire and maintain the knowledge and skillset needed to improve the care of cancer patients and survivors. These activities are developed for a variety of diverse learning styles, professional backgrounds, and levels of provider experience. All of ASCO’s CE programs meet rigorous standards for education and scientific quality, as well as independence.

Health care professionals can obtain CME and/or CE credit through participation in a variety of ASCO activities, including the ASCO Annual Meeting and co-sponsored Symposia, ASCO University® online learning, ASCO-SEP and Maintenance of Certification (MOC) self-assessments ASCO’s Joint Accreditation status is effective through November 2022.
