Dr. Gilberto Lopes Named New Editor in Chief of ASCO's Journal of Global Oncology

ASCO is pleased to announce that Gilberto de Lima Lopes Jr., MD, MBA, FAMS, will become editor in chief of the Society's Journal of Global Oncology (JGO) in early 2017. Dr. Lopes will direct the editorial scope of JGO, an online-only, open-access journal addressing the unique challenges of cancer care and research in low- and middle-income countries.

"Dr. Lopes will bring a wealth of extensive experience in international cancer research and treatment to the Journal of Global Oncology," said ASCO President Daniel F. Hayes, MD, FACP, FASCO. "He has long served as an advocate for expanded access to high-quality cancer care around the globe. We are honored to welcome his expertise and his vision in guiding the scope of the journal."

Dr. Lopes is a medical oncologist, medical director for international programs, and associate director for global oncology at the Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center. He also serves as an associate professor of clinical medicine at the University of Miami in Florida. 

Dr. Lopes' work has largely focused on cancer control and access to medication in low- and middle-income countries. He has published more than 100 papers and book chapters, been the principal or co-principal investigator for more than 100 studies and clinical trials, and spent 10 years working in Asia and Latin America.

"The Journal of Global Oncology helps to fill a significant, growing need for cancer research that focuses on issues specific to low- and middle-income countries," said Dr. Lopes. "I am committed to supporting this vision to improve care for patients with cancer worldwide, and I look forward to furthering that goal in this new role."

Dr. Lopes is currently social media editor for JGO and previously served as an associate editor. Dr. Lopes has also held a variety of other volunteer roles with ASCO, as an international associate editor for the ASCO University Editorial Board, chair of the International Clinical Trials Workshop Working Group, leader of the global health track for the Cancer Education Committee, and a member of various guideline panels. He currently blogs for ASCOconnection.org.

Dr. Lopes has been an active volunteer with many professional organizations, including the International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer, the European Society of Medical Oncology, and the Latin American Cooperative Oncology Group. He has also served as an advisor for the International Atomic Energy Agency, the World Health Organization, and the Pan-American Health Organization.
