Supportive Care Courses Offered Through ASCO University

Oct 20, 2016

In cancer care, supportive care issues are just as important as the primary anticancer therapy. For the primary therapy to be most effective, supportive care concerns must be addressed. ASCO has created two courses on supportive oncology care.

Supportive Oncology Care I and Supportive Oncology Care II are offered through ASCO University®, ASCO’s comprehensive online learning center. These interactive courses allow participants to learn at their own pace in order to facilitate and support enhanced patient care.

The course planners and faculty for both courses include oncologists and advanced practitioners. They are designed to help medical professionals, including advanced practitioners, pharmacists, and fellows.

Supportive Oncology Care I consists of seven sections:

  • Febrile neutropenia
  • Antibiotic prophylaxis during neutropenia
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • A case-based discussion on chemotherapy-related nausea and vomiting
  • Hematopoietic growth factors for red blood cells and platelets
  • Hematopoietic growth factors for white blood cells and platelets
  • Bone health

Participants can earn a maximum of 6 AMA PRA Category 1 Credit(s)™ by viewing the course content and resources, and completing the self-assessment and evaluation. American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM) diplomates may also receive 6 Maintenance of Certification (MOC) points for their participation in the course.

Supportive Oncology Care II consists of eight sections:

  • Mood disorders
  • Neuropathy
  • Mucositis
  • End-of-life care (including family distress and bereavement, and symptom management)
  • Constipation
  • Dermatologic toxicity
  • Soft tissue disorders of the head and neck (including lymphedema and fibrosis)
  • Cancer-related fatigue

Participants can earn a maximum of 6 AMA PRA Category 1 Credit(s)™ by viewing Supportive Oncology Care II content and resources, and completing the self-assessment and evaluation. ABIM diplomates may also receive 6 MOC points for their participation in the course.

ASCO members can purchase Supportive Oncology Care I and Supportive Oncology Care II for $96 each; $120 each for non-members. Both courses are included as part of ASCO University Essentials.

ASCO University Essentials

ASCO University Essentials includes all MOC courses (including the MOC App courses) offered through ASCO University, as well as many other courses that offer continuing medical education (CME), nursing, and pharmacy credit. New content is added each month.

ASCO University Essentials also includes access to the Personalized Learning Dashboard (PLD), which assesses the learner’s current knowledge and generates a list of resources based on their preferred learning style and knowledge gaps. Participants may receive ABIM MOC points and CME credit for completing the PLD.
