ASCO Advocates Strongly in Opposition to CMS Medicare Part B Demo

Jun 28, 2016

ASCO has voiced strong opposition to the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) proposed rule outlining a demonstration project that would reduce reimbursement for Medicare Part B drugs. The demonstration would be based on zip codes that define primary care service areas. In addition to an ongoing dialogue with CMS, the focus of ASCO’s advocacy efforts has moved to Capitol Hill.

In April, more than 20 members of ASCO’s State Affiliate Council (SAC) visited nearly 50 Congressional offices to express their deep concerns regarding the proposal’s singular focus on drug costs, costs that oncologists do not—and cannot—control. Based on data from an ASCO-developed tool which models the cuts oncology practices will incur if this demonstration moves forward, SAC members were able to show lawmakers that the demo outlines a 1.3% cut to hematology/ oncology and medical oncology.

ASCO has and will continue to press the issue by advocating against the demo in meetings with lawmakers and Medicare leadership, as well as urging ASCO members to contact their Congressional representatives on this important issue through ASCO’s ACT Network. The Society will maintain pressure on CMS to withdraw the proposal and focus on real reform that cuts costs and enhances care, while protecting the health and safety of Medicare patients who rely on Medicare Part B drugs.
