ASCO's New Chief Medical Officer

Nov 01, 2012

Dear Colleagues.

  Dr. Richard Schilsky
It is with great pleasure that I announce an important new position within ASCO, that of a Chief Medical Officer (CMO). After a six-month search and 30 exceptional candidates, we have chosen Richard L. Schilsky, MD, to fulfill this key role. Dr. Schilsky comes to ASCO as Chief of Hematology/Oncology in the Department of Medicine and Deputy Director of the University of Chicago Comprehensive Cancer Center. He will be joining the ASCO staff on February 28, 2013.

The Chief Medical Officer position was created by the ASCO Board of Directors and will report directly to the CEO, Allen Lichter, MD. ASCO has branched into many new and important areas in recent years, especially in its quality, policy, communications, and philanthropic efforts. The Board decided it is time to bring on another experienced senior member of the staff leadership team to provide additional insight and guidance as ASCO addresses these critical areas as well as the many issues facing our organization and the field. The CMO will support the president, volunteer leadership, CEO, and staff in communicating and carrying out the overall strategic priorities of the organization.

As many of you know, Dr. Schilsky is a former ASCO president (2008-2009) and a highly respected leader in the field of clinical oncology, specializing in new drug development and treatment of gastrointestinal cancers. And, as a past Board member, former Chair of ASCO’s Cancer Research, Communications, and Government Relations Committees, and a current member of ASCO’s Conquer Cancer Foundation Board, Dr. Schilsky brings with him a firm grasp of the organization including its history, mission, structure, and operations.

All of the candidates were incredibly capable and impressive individuals. Our five-person search committee of Board members was overwhelmed by the interest in this position and the level of quality and experience of each candidate. Needless to say, I consider this a reflection of the importance of ASCO to its members and the field of oncology. I look forward to working with and welcoming Dr. Schilsky to an already stellar ASCO staff team early next year

In the meantime, please join me in congratulating Dr. Schilsky on his new role and this new position within ASCO.

Sincerely,

Sandra Swain, MD
President
