ASCO Connection Thanks Outgoing Editor in Chief, Editorial Board Members

Dec 22, 2016

In December 2016, Jonathan S. Berek, MD, MMS, FASCO, concluded his second term as ASCO Connection editor in chief, a position he had held since 2006. Dr. Berek is the Laurie Kraus Lacob Professor and director of the Stanford Women’s Cancer Center at the Stanford Cancer Institute, where he specializes in gynecologic oncology, and chair of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Stanford.

Several members of the ASCO Connection Editorial Board also concluded their service at the end of 2016 (see sidebar).

ASCO Connection thanks Dr. Berek and the editorial board for the dedication they brought to ASCO’s member publication, which has enabled significant growth over the past 10 years.

Since 2006, the print version of ASCO Connection expanded from 48 pages to an average of 64 pages per issue, and moved from a quarterly publication schedule to a bimonthly one, equating to an increase of up to 160 editorial pages per year. This expansion has allowed for more feature reporting, profiles of ASCO members, expert debates on controversial topics in the field, and career development advice for young professionals.

In 2010, Dr. Berek and the editorial board led the publication (previously called ASCO News) through a major rebranding effort, and relaunched it under the new title ASCO Connection.

Perhaps most significantly, these volunteers have overseen the entire digital life of the publication. Its first standalone website launched in 2007. In 2010, in conjunction with the rebranding of the print edition, ASCOconnection.org went live. This robust and interactive professional networking site features the digital edition of the member magazine as well as blogs authored by thought leaders in oncology and open discussion forums.

These changes would not have been possible without the enthusiasm, support, and innovative thinking of our volunteers.

Dr. Berek is succeeded as editor in chief by Linda R. Duska, MD, MPH, whose 5-year term began on January 1, 2017. She is the associate dean of clinical research, a professor of obstetrics and gynecology, and gynecologic oncology fellowship director at the University of Virginia School of Medicine.

Outgoing ASCO Connection Editorial Board Members

Dr. Berek and the ASCO Connection staff extend their sincere gratitude to the editorial board members whose terms concluded in December 2016. Thank you for contributing your time, energy, and expertise to ASCO’s member publication.
