     In June, Nagi El Saghir, MD, FACP, received one of Lebanon’s most highly regarded honors, the National Cedar Medal, rank of Officer. The award recognized Dr. El Saghir’s work in breast cancer research and community health awareness and outreach.   • Cancer Community Mourns Loss of Patient-Advocate Pioneer Selma R. Schimmel

    In May, the cancer community lost one of its greatest patient advocate pioneers, Selma R. Schimmel, founder of Vital Options International, a not-for-profit cancer communications organization with the mission to facilitate a global cancer dialogue. Ms. Schimmel died on May 21 of malignant psoas syndrome, a complication of the recurrent ovarian cancer diagnosis for which she was being treated.
