ASCO University Offers New Course Covering Resource-Stratified Guidelines

Sep 06, 2017

ASCO has created a series of clinical practice guidelines to benefit clinicians, public health leaders, and policymakers in all resource settings. These resource-stratified guidelines help medical professionals outline appropriate methods of treatment and care based on the level of health care resources available in the country, region, or practice area where care is being given.

ASCO University is turning those guidelines into a new, case-based course series designed to provide further essential guideline information to both U.S.-based and international ASCO members.

The first course in the resource-stratified guideline series offered through ASCO University covers “Management and Care of Women With Invasive Cervical Cancer.” The course is based on the May 2016 ASCO guideline published in Journal of Global Oncology and endorsed by the Society of Gynecologic Oncology and the Gynecologic Cancer InterGroup.

Available through ASCO University and the ASCO Bookstore, the “Invasive Cervical Cancer: Resource-Stratified Guidelines” course is divided into three sections. The first section provides an overview of cervical cancer along with guideline-based treatment options. The final two sections present two case discussions, one featuring a patient with locally advanced cervical cancer and the other a patient who has been diagnosed with early-stage cervical cancer.

The case discussions cover how to treat patients with these disease types in both maximal and enhanced resource settings, as well as in basic and limited resource settings.

The aim of both the course and the resource-stratified guidelines is to establish consistent minimum standards for screening while also realistically accounting for differences in resource levels and health care systems across the world.

ASCO University’s course on “Invasive Cervical Cancer: Resource-Stratified Guidelines” features instruction from William Small, MD, FACRO, FACR, FASTRO, of Loyola Medicine, and Linus T. Chuang, MD, of the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai.

Both Dr. Small, an expert in radiation oncology, and Dr. Chuang, an expert in gynecologic oncology, helped draft the original resource-stratified guideline.

Continuing education and Maintenance of Certification credits are available upon completion of the course, which users can access on both desktop and mobile devices.

The next resource-stratified guidelines course offered through ASCO University, “Secondary Prevention of Cervical Cancer,” is scheduled for release in December 2017. Additional courses on the treatment of colon cancer and the administration of palliative care are slated for 2018.
